Default Who would know?

Who would know if you put in a tier 2 engine into a new build or not? I know a builder would never do it because he has a buisness to worry about. But if you went out and bought a say 32 Holland hull and brought it home and put a 430hp 8.3 cummins rebuilt in her (for 1/4 of the price) who would ask if you put in the proper tier engine?

The easy answer is you would know. Your insurance company would probably check. Courtesy sticker inspection. Registration of boat and engine would reveal. The seller of the engine if it is a reputable dealer/distributer wouldn't sell you one. Even if nobody picked up on it, it may get noticed down the road and you get that fine or even if you went to sell the boat could turn into a nightmare.

Why don't you find a hull pre tier11 and work your magic?

Let me just say I do not plan on building anything, I am just curious about who would know. I have finished 2 boats from kit stage and can't ever remember being asked for engine information more then HP. I get the courtesy sticker from USCG every year and they never check and my insurance co. has never asked either. You would think with the BS we have to go through with our cars that there would be something in place for this. BTW I am not a commercial fisherman so my inspection is probably not as detailed.

Over the summer I stopped by Navtronics/Redman Marine up in York ME.
The guy that owns it built a recent 32 Holland with a REMAN Cummins in it.
His son explained to me that his dad had to "sign an affadavit" with the state of ME that the boat would be used for "commercial purposes only" for at least five consecutive years or something to that effect.

Maybe there is a legal remedy to get around the 2004 (whatever the year) regs??

For what it's worth,

Bill D

btw, I really like the Cummins 6BTAs in my boat but they are NOT "socially friendly". The engines smoke a bit and stink whether they are warm/hot you name it. NO getting around it with mechanical diesels.

On a new or repower build I'll be bolting in Tier II engines, maybe a newer Teir III depending on ALL.

I have a Blue Tec Benz diesel in the car. Urea exhaust injected. ?Tier IV? compliant in ALL 50 states.
You can stick your nose in the tailpipe and smell/see NOTHING!

Maybe overkill in a boat but there are days when fishing/working around the stern that the diesel fumes/smoke "get a bit too much" ! LOL

Ha! The illusion of what is "socially friendly" ! The cost is still impractical.. it sure would be nice to be able to pass those costs on to the people who forced the issue.

Yes, good guys up there. I buy all the boat electronics from Navtronics and had Noell do some spec drawings done for an upper station on the 31 BF hardtop.
In the end I'm keeping the BF "as is".

Since I build them to resell, I go with what everyone likes. I thought tier III was sometime in 2012 or 2013?
I could be wrong.

I heard Cat is coming out with a new V8 6.4? liter that's supposed to be tier III. With all these new engines that can meet tier III, I'm assuming more government intervention, interference, and non-sense is coming real soon.
Pulled this off the web.

I repowered this summer w the 430...8.3. They cost 22k. If you have a core to swap you get 3k off. A new gear is 8k with a trolling valve.
