I work with solidworks and was wondering if any of these DE boat builders use solid modeling. I would love to get a hold of a model of a hull and design my own boat.

I went to RWU. Bunch of lacrosse buddies were in that program. Seems to be a decent one.

Thanks BillD, she did a great job for never doing anything with a boat before and having to turn a picture into a line drawing, haha and then trying to interpret what i saw in my head!

There are some good lines fairing and hydrostatic calculation programs out there for naval architects, but I think it's really hard to beat a wooden half model, or as First Team said, "a block of pine". That's what my father always used. Just playing around, I did a profile view of a lobster boat using AutoCAD 14 about fourteen years ago. That particular program wasn't geared towards that type of design work, but it did ok on the profile view, except the shear should have been a little flatter. Lines fairing though would have been a bit tougher.

I uploaded a smaller version from my previous post because the original displayed too large (couldn't figure out how to remove it once it was posted).

Hey First Team- Great boat! Can you give us some details on the maker, build, modifications etc.? It sounds like you race it- any trophies? Did you build it yourself? Thanks for answering the questions in advance.

Modified Northern Bay 36. I laid up the hull and top myself. Armorflex 953 Series Jet Black hull, Eggshell superstructure. Solid glass hull, foam core superstructure, balsa core overhead. Built in 2001 replacing a NB28 with the same name. Finished by Otis Enterprises Marine in Searsport, Maine (that's me btw).

Yeah, I race a little bit here and there. Reigning champion in Diesel Class H for 5 years in a row. The trophies fill a room, the fun times fill a life time.
At 15,000 lbs before fuel she isn't a light-weight by any means. Been out in some horrible stuff and always come home. Personal worst so far has been 75+ mph winds in 14-20 footers while soaked to the bone and hypothermic (A condition I got while pulling another fisherman's 31 BHM off the granite that had sawed through the keel and pulled it up onto the ramp at the wharf - I had already gone out to the boat to bring the owner back to shore. That will teach me to get into the damn water and haul them out again.) running the boat to a protected harbor. May have been bruised and bloodied but she's always brought me home.
Stock engine - SisuDiesel model 645 turbocharged in-line 6 cylinder with intercooler pumping out 410 hp at 2100 rpm. Only modifications have been a larger alternator, re-plumbing of the raw water system and chrome valve covers. Coupled to the engine is a ZF 280-A gearbox 1.77:1 ratio which has been abused since day one and is a heavy bastard when being carried down the ramp to the float (something I learned the hard way when I tore the clutch pack out while racing, and if you think that the portly woman standing in the middle of the ramp would move for you when you have 200+ lbs of gearbox in your arms trying to get it back aboard your boat which has obvious signs of work going on, you'd be wrong. Wrong in a big fat {get out of my} way. Then she was annoyed when I asked her to please move so I could get by. Mackerel fishermen... what are you going to do?)
Going for the 40+ mph club this year. Zoom zoom

Excellent stories and background on a fine vessel. I think this is just the appetizer and we need the whole entree now. How about setting up a thread for your boat and post the build and any race photos. Thanks!

26x33 3 blade is impressive with that hp! I have a 480hp Volvo with the same gear and I swing a 26x24 3 blade. Got a ton of crap in my boat though.

If you notice on the bow cleat there are two lines, and if you notice on the dock there is some rail missing. Minutes before while I was chatting up a brunette up the steps on the landing, I heard a *snap* and saw the rail get torn off the docks. Needless to say I found my way down the crowded ramp in a hurry to catch the rope before all those boats turned with the tide and a real fiasco began. With some strong arms and the Bailey & Bella (CB44 red & white one in the photo)'s 1,000 hp Cat we got everything back into position and tied off to one of the pilings. Moral of the story: don't raft up 7 deep on a cleat with just lag screws in it.
Brunette was gone by the time I got back up top.
Pft, women
