    Hi Gang -

First post for me - although you can find me on many other forums under the same name/handle.

This spring i bought my first diesel inboard powered boat from a member of this forum - a 1999 28 Henriques Express with twin 200 hp volvo diesels. The boat has treated me fair this season including a 400+ mile trip home from Massachussetts to Maryland. We've logged almost 200 trouble free hours on her, and will continue climbing as we can fish into November here in MD when the weather works.

I have always wanted a DE. Speed has never been of interest to me, i prefer comfort. Aside from 8 - 10 offshore trips per season (avg 35 - 60 mile runs one way) i do alot of inshore wreck fishing for fluke and other bottom critters.

I live 120 miles from the ocean - so have spent 15+ nights on board the Henriques this season tied fast in the slip, and that was always the intent. I do enjoy sitting in the slip a deck chair with a cold one listening to music as the sun fades.

I just bought the Henriques, and am in absolutely no hurry to sell and get into something else.............but i'm always looking and some day within the next 1-3 years i will be running a DE boat.

Call me crazy - but i think i want a boat that has a fully enclosed wheel house so :

    A. I can air condition it
    B. I have that space to use when we stay on the boat

I'm not really looking for a 100% fishing boat, I'm not really looking for a 100% liveaboard.....................i care about fishing more than living aboard, but both are a priority.

What boats exist in the 31 - 33 foot range have :

    - Single Power
    - 18 knt cruise (more would be great, less wouldn't break my heart)......don't really want a 12knt cruiser though
    - Fully Enclosed Wheel House
    - No engine box
    - A decent sized open cockpit for fishability

Within my budget, this will be a used boat and probably 10+ years old.

31 Duffy and 31 JC have caught my eye.............but what other hulls fit my wants?

    Thanks,

    Mike

Ditto on the 31! 33 Flowers. Many others but they would have an engine box.

tough to find a boat without a box in that size range. You might add 33' Fortier to the list, every once in a while an older one that was finished as more "typical" DE will come up for sale, and some of them are very well maintained and in decent shape for their age.

Not crazy...just picky. If I had the money I would do a 30 Calvin Beal, split wheel house, with an engine box.

If you can find a Halvorsen 32, you would definitely get the comfort and cruising speed you are looking for.

My Duffy 31 has an enclosed pilot house, heat & AC, enclosed head, refrig, etc.
No engine box and will cruise at 17 kts at 10 gph. WOT is 24/25 kts.

Henry - i sent you a message. I live near you (I think). I would love to stop by and check out the 31 Duffy just to get a feel for her size and layout. Let me know if that's a possibility

What engines in these Duffy 31’s. Can you fit a QSB under the deck? I know the Yanmars can fit under the floor, just wondering what other engines can.

Depending on usage a Yanmar 8LV would be a nice motor for that hull.

    Hey Mike,

I had the opportunity to ride on a 31 Duffy that was powered with a Cummins QSB 440hp. The engine was under the deck with a generator to boot. She sliced through the chop like a knife @ 22kts cruise speed... that's right CRUISE speed. The house and cabin were roomy enough. The cockpit albeit smaller than others mentioned here was decent size for 4 guys, bottom bouncing for seabass or chunking the Massey's or Dog for tunas. Good on the drift too. Loved the boat, the gentleman who owned it was having another larger built at the time so held on until complete. He sold it to another forum member friend of his who may chime in with additional comments.

Maybe for Bill it is? One thing I have learned on this forum is what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander. Sorry Bill not calling you a goose. For me in that size the 30 Calvin Beal is the best, but to some having a skegbuilt, with an engine box is a cardinal sin.
My dad currently lobsters out of a 31 JC and has said many times he likes it more than his 38 YB. I have threatened to disown him and never let him see his grand kids if he says that again, but to be honest, it is a great hull with plenty of cubic boat.
