Looking at a nice Cape Dory 28 with this motor, how tough would it be to get parts for repairs ? Thanks, Jeff

One company that does lots of Volvo stuff is marinepartsexpress that's based in Maine.

Link to the page for the specific Volvo motor. You'll have to look and see if the parts selection and pricing is acceptable for you. Volvo do have a reputation of being difficult or pricey to find parts. This company has lots of parts for Volvo but if they go under, the selection certainly gets... limited.

Had an engine survey and sea trial completed last week on a CD 28 with this motor. The motor wouldn't hit max rpms , nor was it close to the top speed either. Clean bottom and 18x14.5 prop. Surveyor believes the turbo is shot, only 3 pounds boost. The owner is suppose to repair or replace the turbo and riser. The engine ran well. What else should the mechanic be looking at when working on the turbo ? Trying to cover my butt on this one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Thanks, that's quick turnaround, it's a 165 hp, it's really slow without the turbo and slow with it. Was hoping to find a nice 200 hp, but this boat is pretty nice all way around , I'll live with it. I think it was 11.5 knots at the top on the sea trial. Hopefully we get a look at the turbo next week and see what's up. Jeff

Be careful. If the turbo is shot it is almost certain to be water getting to it through the exhaust. Depending on how much water it could back up into the #5 and 6 cylinder and corrode the valve stems and/or seat causing the valves to fail which trashes the engine.

Thanks Duke, definitely on my mind. I will have the mechanic and the engine surveyor diagnose the cause. Jeff

Jeff, I had the 28CD Flybridge with the 200hp TAMD41A. I did have my turbo rebuilt. Ive seen a few picks of the CD28 with the 165hp and I would be very surprised if water backed up through the exhaust.. Cant imagine it happening on the 200hp. My turbo had a small oil leak so she started blowing some black smoke. I believe the rebuild was around $2K. Once rebuilt I had no issues. I would suggest replacing the elbow and the exhaust hose to the muffler. I had my injectors replaced as well and that made a difference.

I never found parts for the Volvo to be hard to locate, and I bought lots of them.. They werent always cheap, but I never had a problem finding them.

Thanks, just thinking worst possible scenario. I'll add that exhaust hose to the list, thanks. I could kick myself for not coming up to see yours when it was for sale. Unfortunately, I was in the process of trying to buy a Nauset 24 at the time, that didn't survey well. Did you end up buying another DE ?
