Ahoy!, sifting through engine manufacturer power curves for a 45ish foot new build. Looking for real world info/reviews please from people using these 16L engines: Scania DI16, MAN D2868, FPT C16, Volvo D16

Is the FPT the same engine as their 13 liter? I’ve heard it’s the exact same footprint but I have not compared the two on paper.

What HP are you looking at? Volvo would get my vote but the HP is low, commercial rating only.

Yes, the FPT C16 is the same footprint as the 13L. Looking at 1000 hp/ 16L engines. The Volvo 16 is capped at 850hp @ 1900 RPM. The FPT 1000hp @ 2300 RPM, Scania 1150HP @2300 RPM & MAN 1200HP @ 2300RPM. Boat will be seasonal fishing, so we can get away with light duty. Price differences are huge. The Scania 16 is 170K USD for the 1000HP and the 1150 is 200K USD. The MAN 1200HP is about 170KUSD, the Volvo and FPT are around 90K USD !

Tough decision. I would go with the engine that has the best service and parts availability in the area that I use the boat, also taking initial cost into consideration. I wouldn't knock the lower HP rating of the D16 Volvo, that engine should push the boat the same speed at cruise as the other 1,000hp engines. However top speed will suffer with the Volvo.

The FPT c16 1000 got a price bump up to 107k for 2023.
Long term parts etc shouldn't ever be a problem. Iveco group has been around for a long long time.
Local support is a thing. There are a good handful of FPT dealers in Maine, including us. They have a vast network of dealers all over the country and up and down the east coast.
The engine is similar to the 13l, other than displacement the biggest difference being that they went to common rail fuel injection over the unit injectors on the 13l. It is rumored that they will be releasing a 1150hp tune up for them but not sure when.

If you have any questions on the FPT line up of engines please feel free to reach out at anytime.

Is that because they're getting their extra HP with RPMs?

Yes, raising the rpm limit doesn’t increase torque, but it does increase the HP. Another way to look at this is the Cummins QSL versus QSC. The 450hp at 2,100 rpm QSL will cruise a boat every bit as fast, if not slightly faster than the 600hp at 2,800 rpm QSC. But the higher HP engines will have faster top speeds.

Who’s giving you that Scania DI 16 price? I’ve sold 2 in past 3 month and it’s 30k less with MGX transmission.

how"s the long term service and parts availability look with the FTP line ?
plenty of local support out there ?
Im on the west coast and it sounds like good support. Quite a few FPT 13 and some 16's been sold in the Bristol bay fleet. Getting more popular

For boats that fish 6 weeks a year. The russians all had Man diesels in their bay boats and that didn't last long.
