I have a 18' pointer that has an old merc 50 that I'd like to re power. Any suggestions? Boat is rated up to 85. Was thinking a 70 four stroke would be perfect. Trying to buy a used 4 stroke is hard. Not many around.
I run a 50hp 4 stroke an a similar boat, a cc levy 18. It is super economical to run and adequately powered, a 70 would give you more in reserve if you wated or thought youd need it. With me alone, a light load ajd very flat conditipns ive topped out around 22-24 and usually run around 14.
I run an 18' novi skiff with a 70hp four-stroke. Tops out around 22-25 kts in the river under ideal conditions, but tend to run around 15 or less when I am outside with any swell or chop. I think a 50hp would do the job, but I prefer the 70 coming through the mouth if I am against tide/current/wind. I'm out of the Merrimack River in MA.
@BOS - the hull is from Gulf Fleet in Kittery; Chris Tobey did the lay up back in early 2008. My father and I bought two hulls and built out the rest. Open with center/side console. Nice little boats.

We actually bought the hulls from Chris, the dad; didn't have the chance to meet his son at the time. I haven't been by in a while but heard there were some boats in the yard.
I'll try to post some pics later of the build process and end result. Maybe under a new thread - I don't want to take over the re-power discussion too much here.
I had a 19 seaway for a while. it had a 1991 60 hp evinrude 2 stroke. It ran about 20 kts at 3/4 throttle and 25 kts at full. Put 4 guys on it and it would plug along at 18kts at 3/4 throttle. The boat was an 83 and had nothing but a center console and fiberglass box seat.
Good luck. I was looking into a repower before I sold and the problem was weight of the 4 stroke. The 60 hp 4 stroke was OK but the 90, which was max power the boat was rated for, was a little heavy. I was looking at yamahas at the time.
Capttony - I'll look and see if I still have contact info. It has been a few years. BOSBoatMan might be more current since he picked his up recently. Pics are posted under a new thread called "18' novi project"
