Today I picked up a 1977 Pointer from the original owner. It has an 88HP for power and a center console. All in all it is in very good condition for a 35 year old boat. I wonder if anyone has experiance with these boats and if it will opperate well with lower HP.

Awesome skiff! I had an 88 on an old aquasport 19'6 that I gutted and made a side console. She was a clamming and bassing machine. I dont think you can kill thoose evinride 88s. I ran it everywhere WOT and she never missed a beat.

ETA: The boat is STILL running and fishing in NH. I got done beating the snot out of it and gave it away 9 years ago!

Mako, sold the Seaway, want a 30 Calvin Beal
I had a 19 seaway with a 60hp evinrude. Boat ran great with that power. About 26 knots flat out and about 21kts loaded up. Wish I still had it!

Low HP? My 21' pilot house has a 70. I think that an 88 would be more than adequate. Great looking little rig.

I also have a 77 Pointer 18 hull with an old evinrude 50. Been trying to upgrade to a 50 or 60hp 4 stroke. I would think 50 or 60 hp would be fine, it's hard for me to tell without getting all the waterlogged foam out of the hull first

I have the same boat.

I love it but its waterlogged and heavy as hell. I should be ripping the floor out soon, digging out foam and new stringers and deck. I have owned a 19 Seaway and this Pointer. I like the Pointer better. Seems to be a slightly better build.

I have the manuals...you will have no problem with less power.
