Hello all, I just bought a 1983 Seaway 19 ft Center Console. It looks like the 2 side fuel tank were removed at one time....thus resulting in a few soft spots in the aft part of the boat. She still looks to be water tight but if someone were to drop an anchor on deck, I'm willing to bet she'll go right thru. Has anybody had a similar problem? I asked Seaway (now Eastern) and they don't have any drawings from before the bought the molds from Seaway back in 2000.

I did look under the deck through the deck hole/circle and I have some pieces rotten wood...Looks like I'll be replacing the deck. Has anybody done this? If so I was wondering what the bad news will be (AKA: PRICE $$)

How should I go about fixing this? Any suggestions? Many thanks!

Any chance you could post a picture? Think it would help your cause here. SO many variables and a picture would answer 1000 questions up front.

Another 83 Seaway 19

I owned one for a number of years and the deck got spongy over time. I was going to tackle it but found a Sisu 22 project. Sold it and the new owner replaced the deck.

All the bracing grid below the deck was rotten. Most of the thwartship timbers had completely rotted out and were gone physically, with just the glass left. Seaway used 3/4" non-marine grade plywood, so over time, the deck is going to go.There was little venilation to the bilge. That would have helped minimize the rot over the years.

It is not an expensive or hard job if you do it yourself. Just time.

Agreed its not THAT expensive but yeah it'll cost more than the boat's worth.

I would check the transom first. Willing to bet that a thirty year old transom's probably on the way out as well, if not already there. Now you're talking almost a total rebuild.

I did one and the stringers in mine were shot as well. While it was not that expensive or difficult, as BosBoatMan said, it will likely exceed the value of the boat. The transom, as mentioned, should also be looked at.

Thanks for feedback

Hi Gang..many thanks for the posts/feedback. I wish I posted these questions a few weeks ago. The good news is that I got the boat for next to nothing. I'm going to have it looked at this weekend by a fiberglass shop. I'll let you know what the bad $$$ news is.

I've done a couple decks on these 19's.A cheepe way is to go right over the existing deck with some 3/8 ply. That way you don't have to deal with the stringers which are i beleve fir chopper gunned down.

They are fiberglass over fir. My stringers were mulch. You may have better luck...

That brings back memories... Mine was worse than that. The wood was literally mulch.

I'm interested to know what ended up happening with this project - do you have any pics of her finished up?
