Anyone know if they cored below the waterline in 1988 JC?
I owned one that was built in the 70's that was solid below, cored above.
Looking at one that seems to be cored below, and may be showing signs of moisture (moisure meter)... .. Pretty sure its cored and probably wet.

Moisture meters will give you a misleading reading unless you know the exact materials used and the thickness of the different materials

I borrowed this one from a friend who owns a yard :

Don’t get me wrong … I want it to be dry so I hope it’s misleading me! I’m gonna try again from inside , and also try tapping the hull with a small hammer to listen for delam .

I have a 1983 31' JC Provincetown..Airex cored from keel to chine, with solid fiberglass pockets for thru-hulls. Look up old threads of Capt. Larry for extensive details of JC's.

It's not going to give you an accurate reading. Very good chance it's not wet at all but that meter will say it is. If it's an airex core that is a good thing. Airex core won't absorb water anyway.

The foam cores on the jc’s aren’t exactly airex, but a semi-closed cell that does in fact absorb water over time. If it’s dry it’s pink, when wet it turns purple. I’m told it’s called “klegecell”, an early foam coring material that’s quite good but it not entirely Moisture resistant. At least it won’t rot!

A good hull is a good hull,. Solid fiberglass will also rot if it is penetrated by water long enough. If you haven't seen it happen don't think it doesn't. Nothing is rot proof. Some of those moisture meters are garbage. If you run them along bottom paint they will show moisture no matter what.

if your in doubt , drill some holes to check the core , I have come to believe the moisture meters , the question is how severe is the water penetration
