As WoundUpMarine and CEShawn, I too work on ships and like Shawn am responsible formaking sure the fuel we bunker will burn. With todays regulation ULSD is becoming commonplace. We are talking 0.000x% of sulfer. So we use the additives on motor ships.
#2 fuel will work fine in your boat, the problem is I have never seen a spec sheet when they deliver it to my home boiler. So what are you getting and what is important? #1, the flash point and specific gravity. #2 sulfer content, #3 cetane index you want a min of 40, mid 50's is better, finally take a look at the ash content.
So this will work no problem but just remember as others have stated there are more specifications put into road diesel, or Marine Gas Oil, the Navy uses F-76 Diesel fuel Marine, which is just a bit better quality diesel "with different specs".
Got you worried?, then stay with the diesel. An old timer would use the #2 off the truck and dump some mystery oil in the tank.
I could go on more.....one other thing is your engine, are you using a higher speed engine like a yanmar doing 3000+ rpm or running at 2200. The higher speed requires a bit quicker ignition so it won't lag. This isn't a concern on a ship but is on smaller craft.....
that's enough.....FWE
