Got an email from a green head who is looking @ this engine.
Has 5,000 "lobsta hours" on it.

I do not have a clue about JD marine diesels only that a lot of lobster guys have them in their boats.

I did a little bit of research and the engine is ? turbo charged ? non-after cooled, has liners and is rated @ 2500 rpm.

Sound right ?

What's the scoop on these engines? How many hours can you get out of one??

Base engine of course before "over haul" etc.

Are these a "throw away engine after 5000 hrs.

Appreciated,

Bill D

btw, I'm a "green head too" ! :(

10-12,000 is not uncommon my uncle has one with over 18,000 hours. The only problem I know of to watch out for is they had trouble with the harmonic balancers loosening up and ruining the crankshaft.

Proven American Iron good for 10-15k. As always normal maintenance is necessary.Long term engine though, and it is sleaved and completely rebuildable.

The 220's were noted for liner erosion around 7 000 hours if the proper coolant additive wasn't used.As long as the proper coolant has been used they are a great engine. I would get a fleetgaurd coolant test strip and test the coolant for DCA,or confirm that it has red coolant .They are under rated as far as HP goes, and start very well in cold weather.Alot of the crank problems came from people engaging the electric clutch while turning high rpm.I had one that had 8000 hrs when I sold it and I never touched a wrench except to adjust the valves.Deere doesn't offer them any more if that tells you anything.
