i have a 2012 Tacoma gen 2 love it but it’s time for a new one
I have heard and read about the 2016 and newer gen3 with the 6 speed auto trans haveing shifting problems
short shifting and always searching for a gear
anyone have one ? Masters Toyota tech told me the tranny is what’s called a learned transmission and it takes time and miles to learn . Ones driving habits and gets better over time and there are after market tunes that help
i want a 2023 because in 2024 the 4th gen is coming out and I won’t buy a first year model of anything thanks guys

Ha.. I’m in the same “Boat”.. no pun intended, good luck & brace yourself. Everyone else is on the Hunt too. I did a lot of research, couple tools in used were YouTube & Tacoma World Fourm. That Fourm definitely not as nice as people on here.

Other things I’ve heard, is have 3 options. Color’s & needs & wants. Some dealers won’t sell to you if your not from there area, & MSRP is all over the place. I would start sooner than later. I found mine, jus trying to finish up all little details.

I have a 16 Taco & never noticed an issue, unlike our 15 Equinox whose tranny did take time to “learn” our driving habits.

One negative on the Taco is the cruise control being very “reactive”, not proactive. Absolutely of no use on hilly terrains or when towing. Barely passable driving in the flats of the Midwest.

Not a Taco owner but just IMO I think this is why we have the 9, 10, 11 speed transmissions today. I have a Japanese “performance” sedan with a 6-speed gearbox. I’ve owned it for over five years, and I still get into sticky situations when I need acceleration and the box can’t seem to find the right gear and the engine bogs down. The “smart” gearboxes were never particularly all that smart. Again, just IMO

I have a 21 taco. It’s been a great truck. Towed my northcoast 21 on a duel axle trailer no problem.
This is my first automatic car in a while so I was expecting some jumpiness in the transmission. It’s not a sports car but no problem with it.
We had a lot of fun with it on the cape beaches this summer. Really fun off-road with some air out, never get stuck.
I agree with the post above about the cruise control. I had high hopes with the built in radar and the auto sensor. That works really well when someone merges in front of you but as soon as there’s any incline it downshifts and you’re burning 2 gallons a minute going up an ant hill.
Otherwise it’s been a great little truck.

Maybe I will stay the course a bit longer with my 2011 4-cylinder, 5-speed stick, Tacoma. She wants my next Tacoma to be an automatic, but really, a learning curve for a transmission?

What happens with a post-2016 Tacoma when someone other than the owner is in the driver's seat -- new data has to be downloaded?

"learning' transmissions have been a thing since the early 2000s. Most people here with autos have probably owned one and didn't even know it. Some can be clunkier than others. If you have any mid-late model pickup, guess what...they've had a "learning" transmission. Some work better than others. Most of the Taco complaints I have seen (and I've never owned one) seem to come from people who have owned them for decades and aren't used to the new tranny/engine combo. If someone who has never had one before jumped in the driver seat, they probably wouldn't even notice it, or only notice slightly.

I have a 2019 that I’ve owned for 4 years. I like everything except the transmission. It’s not horrible but it is clunky. It downshifts awkwardly. I often wish it was a manual transmission but that isn’t really practical for me. Hope that helps.

I have a couple tacomas as plow trucks . I bought one used 12 yrs old with 180 k on it . The frame failed and. Toyota replaced the frame . I have to pay for shocks but got a new frame , brake and fuel lines They stepped up big time with those warranty claims. Always had sticks.

Glad you love the new one. Have a 2015 PreRunner that just turned 280000 miles today. Had issues with the steering and cooling lines under the truck rotting out. I am hoping not to have to get a new one until 2026. Redesign and possible hybrid to get a little more MPG.

I've had a few Toyotas. 1, Tacoma, 1 Tundra, a Corolla Sport and two 4Runners. Only had issues with the Corolla... We just got out of our 2007 4 Runner with 258,000 on her. bought it with 48,000 miles on it and had it for 13 years. Great Truck!!. We just bought a 2023 4 Runner. So far so good but only 5,000 miles on it now. I can speak to the cruise control. It works fine on the parkway here in NJ (Albeit pretty flat) however I don't like the radar feature that automatically adjusts your speed to maintain distance... I want the LFGTFOTW feature... Any marines on here know what that is. Lol
