The South Shore has real nice lines and I think tend to look good with a short house on top. Can anyone comment on how they ride? I think someone posted a while back that these can now be built as the Eastcoast 30??

Downeastless
I fished one about half a dozen times. Its really tough because I was in some snot outside Nantucket once and thought we were doing decent, but looking back seemed very "bouncy" like she was pushing through the water but was almost ontop of it. I was a little disappointed when I saw a Luhrs 32 Open pass us, so that made me really think. We had a Luhrs 32 Open too, at the time but had engine problems and fishing the SS30 that was a friends.

I say that and take it with a grain of salt, I'd be very interested in going back on one because that was the first time I was ever on a downeast. My brother and father were on it to and it turned them away, matter of fact it took about three years to talk my Dad into buying the H&H 40 with me after that.

Is the keel on the ss30, not a full keel? How would this effect handling? I know very little about hull designs, been trying to learn more. Been learning a bunch on the site. I have heard this boat is suppose to be great in a head sea? It doesn't look like a very big 30. They are beautiful though. Anyone know more on the handling?

The "new" 30 Calvin Beal

Stewart Workman @ SW Boatworks Stueben Maine and Calvin Beal are "launching" a new 30 footer. The plug for the mold is being finished now and according to Stewart will be ready in 3-4 months.

The "new" 30 will have a 12 ft beam, 11'6" @ the transom and be able to swing up to a 28" wheel.

He's talking 35+ mph speeds with 420 hp.

For what it's worth,

I first heard about the new calvin 30 a few months ago cant wait to see what it will look like, Stew does really nice work so I'm sure it will be great.

The south shore is on of my favorite hulls that Molli G is for sale right now absolutly gorgeous boat. Not the best offshore hull but great for fishing in the bay.

Jerry can you provide more detail on this hull offshore? Is just undersized in your opinion, slippery or other issues?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

By offshore I mean spending the night on the boat. The 30ss is a day fishing boat great speed, slippery hull. I have only been on one but there was not a lot of head room down below, I thought the hull rode great. i would not want to take it out in anything over 3-5 ft seas. That would be uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong I would love to own one of these hull I think they are great riding boats and nice looking too.

but compaired to the new cb30 12' beam compaired to 10' makes a huge difference. Just my opinion.

All boats are like women some do things better than others but none of them will do it all.

I was on the red one at the Pemaquid boat races.(56 m.p.h.)Bruce Engert owns it.I have built 11 34 Southshores and have just rolled out my first 30 this week.I have got two of them in the water now.I build just for myself and have every angle and stage of completion on these Southshores.Ask away.

the red one is named thunderbolt, it lives in wiscasset on a trailer at the moment, didnt even take the shrink wrap off it this year, hopefully we'll get to see it in the water next summer

When i was boat shopping in 2010 i saw this beauty parked by a real estate office on rt 1 in Maine so i stopped and checked it out, i was more interested in the trailer than the boat though the boat sure is nice. We were back that way this fall and it was still there all gift wrapped!!

i think if you go talk to mike deskin about the destiny a 30 south shore boat he would more than gladdly fill your ear . i beleive he has fished that boat from here in ct to canada border plus georges banks for giants. it sounds like it is a tough little 30. and yes i have slept on the decks of my 29 seavee in my grundens with honda 2000 generator running in my ear out at block canyon. choose your days for offshore and figure out were you are going to run the boat the most.
