I was thinking more along the lines of the quality of the boat.

Original JC 31s are slower but sleeker than the Eastern models. Original JCs had Fiberglass fuel tanks Easterns have Aluminum. Aluminum tanks last about twenty years.
The best JCs were made with solid glass hulls, however they are very hard to fine. Kristen was all solid with Fiberglass fuel tanks which makes her non time sensitive.
Fuel tank replacement on a JC or for that matter any DE boat usually requires that the entire deck be removed. A very invasive job.
Eastern boats are finished far nicer that the original JCs. They come with headliners, teak & holly floors quality Wynne or S/G windows. They also have more head room that the original JCs. They do this by building the house a little higher on the hull. It takes a little away from the lines.
All Easterns are cord. Cording has come a long way since the early years. Easterns run well with a 370 Cummins or Yanmar. Both motors will give you 19 knots with no problem.
Eastern also removed some of the keel which is another reason why they may be a little faster; however the large keel does give stability.

Thats more of what i was wanting to know. So then that eastern 31 in your opinion would be a good cruising boat maybe not as good in rough water as some others but would be a good all around boat? would you say its a step above like the mainship pilot 30 or 35?

Yes , most def my opinion. Those main ships do have a nice interior layout that's tempting. When I build my boat I'm gonna try to lay it out similar . But in a 38 NB

A 31 JC is by far a better seaboat indeed. Find a good one like mine that sold today.
Thanks Captainlarry

stay away from thoose mainships, pure junk. One sat on blocks next to me before sandy hit. Sounded like a rubber maid garbage can when you banged on it. after sandy it had holes in it about 3 foot diameter. whole boat is laid up with coremat and 2 layers of woven. outter skin is about 1/8 inch thick. You want a good built cruiser, based off the 31, checkout judge yachts

Mainship is a fine boat if you're comparing it to a Bayliner. Produced in a factory along with Luhrs & Silverton boat-lines for the masses. Certainly not hand-laid by a New England craftsman that knows and shook the hand of the buyer personally...

Eastern 31

I have been very happy with my Eastern 31, she has been gone through from bow to stern the past few years with all new electrical, windows, bow thruster, water, waste and fuel taks, new decks, hatches, rebuilt transmission, shaft, cutless bearing, prop, and other items. Think she will be going on the market later in the year.

You have a good one before they started making them taller. Your Eastern was actually a rep of Skippys which was off the original JC plan. Your keel is the same as mine. Your JC is a diamond. The bridge removal came out great.
