Every so often I see a pic of a DE with a stern mounted sail.
What is the function of the sail??
Minimize drift ???

Riding sail. Used as a stabilizer and reduces roll, or keep you on course with less rudder correction. Depends on who you ask. I know a couple of the 80+ year old wood draggers around me use them to steady the rolling motion on rougher days. Wind catches it and sort of keeps the boat from aggressively rolling and allows you to leave them helm and have an easier time working the deck. They definitely work though.
