I would say first off, that 6000 is not short money at all for a rebuilt 3208. Most feel that 4000 hrs on a fresh 435 is a lot of hours, on the second time around, I would walk away real quick. I know 2 different people that sold running take out 375hp 3208s and got way less than 6000 for them. Closer to 3k. Just my 2 cents, but 435's were not considered big hour engines.

I concur the 3208 TA CAT mat its match at a rating of 375 HP after that the envelope was pushed beyond the limit of the block. The 425 & finally the 435 HP was the swan song for the 3208 CAT. RIP for one of the finest motors ever built.

Back to your question. The 3208 TA model from 375 to 435 would be correct in using the 1:5 gear, as wheel clearance is a problem. On a 435 0r 375 HP both motors are rated at continuous run of 2400 RPMs which is 400 RPMs off of WOT. A 435 or 375 at 2400 RPMs put out approx. the same amount of useable HP. Therefore the 375 is the better choice.
Lastly 6K is much too much money for that motor which I would not purchase. Why buy HP that you cannot use.

I had a 3208TA 450HP which I sold last year.
Larry hits the nail on the head with the rpm/power curve issue. My 450HP was at the 2700-2800RPM zone and not really usable for any length of time.
You'd wind up cruising with a 435/450 at the same speed as a 375.

Mine was in great shape when I sold it and I wasn't worried about the
"hand-grenade" since I ran in the recommended RPM range.

i'd go with that, has more torque than a 3208, and burns waaaaaaaay less fuel. i have a 3126 myself, more or less the same motor. getting injectors reseated not a big deal if they still fall into spec, if not the seats need to be changed, sometimes easy, sometimes not. i have it in a 35 bruno. and it's lighter

I just put a rebuilt 3208 435hp in my AK gillnetter. Heading up from CA to AK tonight to get the engine hooked up. BoatDiesel and SBmar.com guru Tony A, coached me on the purchase and said if you prop it to 375hp specs at full load, it would be good for the normal 3208 life span. I saw no fear in purchasing it..... check out boatdiesel for lots of good tech tips.

Had a DE, now 24' Privateer
I own a 3208t(320hp) i wish i had the ta(375) but would never consider going to the 435. Too much hp for this engine. I know of a couple 3208ta(375) that have gone over 10,000hrs.

I love my 3208t dont get me wrong, 8 years later and not a hiccup. Just wish i had a lil more power at times, but after re-propping the boat i am very pleased with the numbers i get and lil fuel i do burn.

Stay away from the 435 rebuild is my vote. 3208ta(375) thats a different story

If your run @ 2400 RPMs you will be getting approx. 235 HP. If you have your heart still set on that 435 HP. then wheel the boat so you turn 3000 RPMs and the load with be similar to a 375 HP

There is a 35 Bruno in my harbor with the 3208 cat 225hp that cant't get wheeled right as a working lobster boat. Not enough wheel well. 22" dia is as large as you can go and they suspect that is to big.
