Hello ALL,
Following my trip up to Flowers Boat Shop last Saturday, today I took a ride down to Westbrook CT for a "sea trial" on Todd's custom built 33 Flowers Emily Rose.
Todd was kind enough to take a couple hours out of his busy schedule to show me the boat and how it performs.
I'll say 1st that Todd did a great job building the boat. Fit and finish is excellent, finishes are smooth and wipe up easiliy. He did a nice job laying out the front cabin, helm area and cockpit.
2nd is I was surprise @ how big the boat is in the water and low to the water.
3rd I was impressed how flat the boat runs from no wake speed to 24+knots.
The bow is @ best up maybe 5 degrees, very flat running with excellent visibility.
Todd's boat is powered by the Yanmar 420 (3300 rated) swinging a 26X31 prop with a 2.5:1 gear. The boat came up to cruise speed nice and smooth. Speed was 20knots @ 2500 rpm burning about 12-13 gals/hr., bump the throttle up to 2600-2650 and she easily sails at 21-22 knots depending on wind and current.
The boat ran super smooth, tracks straight and I took the wheel @ 22 knots and ran the boat all 4 sea/ wind ways and in tight circles and figure 8s.
The boat handles very nicely. In fairness it was a fairly flat day on Long Island sound with a 1-2 foot chop. The hull will go pretty much as fast as you want with the throttle. No keel walking.
Todd assured me that his 100 mile one way trips and back to the canyons coming back in lousy weather and bigger seas the boat ran really nice backing off to 16-17 knots.
Beautiful boat, beautiful job.
btw, I had Todd check his records, he weighed the finished boat (he built it fairly heavy as a fishing/cruiser) on a lift, came in at 13,800 lbs. with 220 gallons of fuel.
I really like the 33 Flowers. Smooth sharp entry, wide 12 ft beam and fast for a DE.
