A buddy of mine just bought a 34 duffy.I believe the boat was built in the early eighties or even late seventies.I cant believe the difference in the two hulls. The 34 can fit inside my 35.What a difference 1 foot makes.Did Spencer Lincoln design the 34 or did Duffy. Why such a big change in say seven years.Where the 34s a popular boat?Does anyone know how many were built?
Happy Good Friday all!

Only 1 foot!!!!

The 34 was the start of the 35 Duffy. The 34 was a very low sheared boat as was the original 35 Duffy, which they called the low shear model. In around 1990 they made the high shear Duffy & for a few years he offered both the high & low shear models. Today it is only the high shear that is in production.

Yes what a difference a 1 foot made in the two boats. The 34 appears to be much smaller, but a lot has to do with the fact that you are most likely comparing it to your high shear 35. The higher shear makes a very big appearance difference because as the shear is raised the boat picks up a little beam at the gunnels.

Big differences is the 34s all had motor boxes. In the area of what a difference a foot makes, the 34 pushes much easier with little HP. 300 Ponies in a 34 makes it a rocket. The 35 needs 400- 450 to make run.

Both boats are diamonds in every area and I rate the 34 & 35top dog in their size range.

I really wish there was an easier way to post pics here.

Hurdy, Use the "Post Reply" tab at the bottom of the thread instead of the quick reply. Then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Its very easy to post a picture using that.

I believe Richard Duffy and his father designed the 34 and started building it in their living room. The 35 came along when Richard wanted a much bigger boat in a 35 than what he had made in the 34. Spencer Lincoln designed what Richard was looking for along with a few other models for Richard.

I have this book called Maine Lobsterboats by Virginia Thorndike. There is no real mention of Richard Duffy, its all about Spencer Lincoln and his design of the Duffy 35 and BHM 31.

Spencer Lincoln designed a lot more boats than the BHM 31 and 35 Duffy.

People can write anything they want in their books. Who are you intrested in?
