started the cabin demolition on my 36 Harris today. Planing on removing the rest of the cabin and fore deck once boat is at the house. I will be putting a trunk cabin on made from what I believe is penske board. Been getting some great ideas from the site and will keep this thread going as I do the rebuild.

36 ft harris rebuild

Islandlure,

Was your boat the same Harris for sale on Midcoast with the 6-71 TI?

The Harris sportfish hulls have a nice classic Merritt look. Why are you going to all the work of tearing it apart? I can see removing the tower to lighten it.

The original cabin had been painted with enamel when I bought the boat and it is a total maintenance nightmare every two seasons plus there is a good amount of rot around the front windows. I hope that by lightening up the structure that I can take some of the yaw out of the boat in a following sea and gain a little speed. I had hoped I could sell the Harris and take the money and buy a 43 Lowel hull but haven't had much luck there so I am going to make the Harris what I want. I have done so much to the boat already (new deck, cap rail, engine work the list goes on) that I figure I'm going all in. When I bought the boat I cut out the original flybridge layout and built a new one so it was not easy to take the saw to that many hours of labor but she will love the plan I have in store for her.

Island lure,

Are you going to make the new cabin and trunk like the charter boat design Harris offered. I know of 2, the Priority 2 near you, and one that was sold on ebay or Craig's list a few years ago in Groton, CT. I forgot the name but know Bill Brown ran it for a few years. Priority 2 was the Nancy B out of Niantic

Any recommendation on what type of structural core I should glass over

How is the rebuild progressing. it is a massive project

Started the sawzal up today and removed the center of the cabin. First thing I did was build a 40x22 ft shed. My plan is to hit it hard right after the fall fishing. Hope it will go pretty smooth having the boat right in the back yard. I will post some pics tof the demo later this week.

Did you finish? Any pictures?

Been a slow start just got in the nida core and started on replacing the steering bulkhead. I had a lot of work to do just getting a structure built and power run to it. I will get out tonight and take some photos. Do you have any pics you could post of the layout on your cabin?

Dot E Dee was one of the 1st if not the 1st 36 ft harris's built by Ron Tarr when he was in Salisbury, MA

Island Lure; I can send you interior pictures but they may not fit your needs as I do not have a lower helm. I also have some of the original Harris layout drawings.

These boats do not like a lot of weight forward. I repalced all my interior plywood with Nidacore and bow came up 6". It is a different boat with less weight forward. It is still a heavy boat and I need more power.
