Libby is one of those classic downeast old school names. Hard to beat a Libby. They never pumped them out which is probably why you don't see them for sale too often.

They have great lines. Really pretty boats. I like to day dream about the ultimate tuna boat.

One day I'd love to built a giant 55 or 60 footer. Combine the comforts of a big sporty with the stability of an offshore lobster. Maybe build it out of steel with an aluminum house. Like a luxury mr. Marco

I dream big haha.

38 libby

Great boats! The 38 Libby was referred to as a 39 YB if you, will by Ernie. They are fuller in the bow and have less rocker (don't come up as high)
LOA 37'6" beam 13' transom 11'6".One of the easiest pushed boats there are.
Unbelievable in beam, quartering, and following seas. The rougher it gets the better she gets. Here's some "numbers",

38 lobsterboat @16,500lbs JD 6076 300hp ZF 280A 2:1 wheel 25x29x3 24Kts
(boat ran 1Kt/100rpm

38 tuna/sport @18,000lbs Cummins 8.3 430hp 2:1gear wheel? 27+KTS WOT
(once again pretty much 1kt/100rpm)

38 charter/tuna @21,000lbs JD 8.1 375hp TD 5075A 1.77:1, 25.5x27x4LH
24.8Kts at seatrial 12yrs ago. 23.5Kts last week @90% load with 6 POB and @175gals fuel.

That boat with the 650 Scania out to fly.I spoke to a guy years ago that built one with a 650 Mack and got 38Kts out of it.I thought he meant mph and he said NO!! and spelled out K.N.O.T.S!!

38 Libby

Was the "Uncle Sheb".Last I knew Glenn Libby had the boat and put either a 3116 or 3126 cat in it.Seeing we'ere on the Libby subject Norman Libby has the 41 mold. 41x15'10'' 14'+ transom. This was done same as the 35/40 RP.The 38 hull was cut, lengthened, increase beam.
A couple of the race videos posted lately have
Dixon Smith's 41 Libby "Size Matters" (black boat)in them.It appeared to a couple of us that it was running about the same attitude as a NB racing in the video.
Don't know what Dixon has for power ,though she appears to be going right along.

Dixon Smith has a C13 FPT Marine engine rated at 750 Mhp. Roger Kennedy sold and services it of Kennedy Marine. It is a 30+ knot boat. Wins a lot of races in the circuit in its class.

Here is a link to some lobster boat race pictures and Size Matter is in here along with a bunch of other boats all powered with FPT Cursor 13 engines (IVECO). Lisa Marie, Size Matters, Jill Cayden, Gramps Bird, Amanda Joy and Logi Bear and so on. Amanda Joy and Logi Bear is also a 41' Libby a little less hp so it only gets 28 knots. Some of the race results show how badly the sand bagging goes on in some cases as I know the boats are in some cases faster than what is presented in these results ;). All a part of the game I guess.

Not wanting to steal this thread but another hull I have been impressed with recently is the 42' Mussel Ridge. We launched one with a 750 Mhp FPT engine last fall and with 2.19:1 gear and full of fuel with an unkown weight the boat did 29 knots on sea trial. I would think with 800+ hp it would be 30+ knot boat as well. I only bring it up as it is in the same length and beam ranges or close. Many, many nice boats out there for sure.

That's impressive! Who has the molds? How does the 34 compare?

Nernie's sons have the molds. Two of his boys fish out of the 38's and his other two sons (and two grandsons) fish out of the 34's. I think the 38 is just a stretched out version of the 34. They're both nice sailing hulls. They have a little more shear and higher bows than Calvin's boats.

38 Libby

I have not spoken with anyone up there lately.
Last I knew Norman has the 41 mold and I was led to believe that SW boatworks had purchased the 34 & 38 molds.(by posts on here)
The 38 came first and I believe Keith Smith had the plug finished off .
Keith later had the 34 Why Knot.(think he may now have a 41)
I know there are 2-molds 34 & 38 but did not think the 34 was a "shortened 38"
The 2- 34's I mentioned in an earlier post were/are Glen & Lebarron's
Norman & Ivan have/had 38's.

You're probably right about the molds being at SW Boatworks. They were over by Nernie's old shop before they tore it down. I was just guessing at the 38 being a stretched 34. I see these guys all the time, but never asked. I was just going by what they look like when Lebaron's is hauled out beside Ivan's.
