Pros- Fast, great on fuel, runs a great following sea, alot of boat for 38ft, raises fish

Cons- hard in a big head, does not carry wieght foward very well

Thats off the top of my head, I own a 36 but spend a good amount of wheel time on a 38.

Tunalater how would you compare the 38 to the 36 northern bay? Also what other boats should i look at in the 38' range? For speed and a good sea boat?

The 38 is much bigger then the 36, it has 9 inches more freeboard. The biggest improvement they made is the 38 can swing up to a 34 inch whell and the 36 only a 28. It makes for a much smoother ride and makes the boat alot faster. As far as ride they are almost the same boat, the 38 just gets pushed around a little less then the 36.

I have heard the 38 Calvin Beal is a good riding boat but have never been on one. The 38 Duffy is a tank but with all tanks its not easy to push along a good speed. Other 38's I can't commment much on are young brothers, H&H and Libby.

A few more to consider are;

38' x 13'6" Flowers; same length, width, and depth as the Northern Bay 38'. I've looked at both and I personally think the Flowers is an improvement over the NB 38, but that's just my opinion.

38'9" x 13'1" Lowell Brothers; a few inches narrower than the NB 38 and Flowers, is also a built-down design and looks to be a nice boat. This boat will have a very soft ride from what I've seen of the hull. Check out their website.

38'8" x 12'8" Wesmac; hard chined, and also most expensive. I really like the design of the Wesmac, although it's a little narrower than the other 38's.

38'9" x 15' Calvin Beal; huge boat for 38', dwarfs the other 38's that I mentioned and can spin a big prop (34" I believe). Probably won't deliver as soft of a head sea ride as the Flowers and Lowell Bros.

Out of all the hulls mentioned the Lowell is for some reason the least talked about but IMO the best looking bottom. I would build there 43 before any hull on the market today.

Lowell Brothers need to get more pics of their new 38' out on the internet! It's probably why me and everyone else forgets about them and they rarely get mentioned on the internet. If it's like their 43', then it would be a really nice boat. This is the only pic of their 38' that I'm aware of; check out the bow on this boat. It won't be the fastest boat, but sure would slice the big water nice.

Forgot to mention the 38' Holland. I think it's approx. 12'8" beam. There are videos of Whistlin' Dixie, a 40' Holland (38' stretched 2') on youtube. There are some good pics of a 38' Holland on Clark Island boatworks website, the boat's name is "Six Corkers".

If I were to build a 40 something boat this hull would be on the short list.
I love the look of the bottom.

I can't imagine anything better than the nb38 for a head or following sea. I don't care for it in a beam sea hauling traps in trawls. If you are anywhere near Cohasset I can give you a ride. One of the tuna guys built one and it is more effecient and faster than a 35 duffy that goes to the same places.

Still working on pics, can't seem to be with a camera and a computer at the same time

Lobstacatcher how do you like the 38 northern bay and what engine would you put in her if you were to build her as a charter boat?

I had a 35 duffy built back in 1983. it and me were one. The Northern bay has it all over the 35 Duffy except hauling lobster pot trawls in a beam sea. The Duffy just did that flawlessly. I miss that part. I have a Volvo penta D6 330. My boat is pictured in some of the ads for Volvo Penta. It performs well in a lobsterboat. As a charter boat that will be built heavier, You should put more HP to get the higher speeds.

Come on Lobster what are you doing with it, sell it already. I think Goodchance is looking for a project.

The offer I have made is as good as it will get. It is lower than I should have offered. I also thought about keeping the Duffy and selling the NB 38.
