A neglected Isuzu

well attacked my project of changing the exhaust manifold on my engine today. the bolts attaching the exhaust manifold were totally wasted so i had to sawzall off the flanges and then grind the bolts off. the turbo was all kinds of wastes, chipped at least a millimeter of rust off the housing, and the leading edge of the compressor wheel looks horrible as well. figured while i was at it would do as much other works as i could. the heat exchanger, aftercooler, and gear cooler are all going to get acid washed and pressure tested. putting new hoses, belts and a new raw water pump on. tomorrow i gotta clean the engine up and try and paint it as best i can, then clean all over the bilges as they are disgusting. there is a picture of the "air filter" too. its a mesh filter with a shop vac filter on it, and as it rusted all that crap went through the turbo. most of the engine should be back together by the end of the week, hopefully the turbo doesn't take too long to get back together.

headed down to hamiltons tomorrow to get a few anchor deck haches and some other goodies to do a few fun projects as well

Haha yeah, I know I need a new rotor, not sure about the housing. The flange to the exhaust out is pretty wasted. I gotta get some prices before I make any decisions

A vacuum air filter for the turbo?Thats a good one! very clever.Im still laughing at the beer six pack holder gasket I had for the water pump on the Perkins that came with mine.Good luck with the repairs man!

the shaft on the turbo. how much can you move it? up down? in out? toss it its done. the trouble with parts and pieces that pass through it that shouldnt. they tend to screw up other engine parts. like pistons rings things like that

Hate to tell you this, but that's the stock air filter...
Also, you need a new turbo, stop wondering about the scrap in your hand, you need a new turbo.

Travis, I called norpro a while ago and the informed me that was the air filter they send their engines out with. I don't think they appretiated my thoughts on how stupid that was. The turbo bearings are fine, no play what so ever, but of course Travis is right. Not wanting to buy a new turbo certainly isn't going to magically fix mine, and that compressor wheel is toast.

FWIW - The day before yesterday the guy who keeps his Chesapeake Bay crabboat two slips down from the charter boat I mate on sent 2/3rds of his index finger through his turbo. Surgically amputated!! Have no idea how he is going to get the rest of his finger out of the engine.

Probably stuck to the internal fins on his intercooler, I wouldn't bother trying to put the pieces back together, but they do need to come out. Depending on the type of engine it is there are various ways of obtaining the foreign matter.

not an overly productive day today, went down to hamiltons and bought some supplies, got the hatch installed to give me access to the battery. there was a tray glassed into the hull under where the hatch is, but they had the battery in a box infront of the engine, so i moved it also bought some speakers to install, but of course when i got home i realized they were black, so next time im at hamiltons they are getting changed in for white ones.

Just stick some blue filter material over the turbo and call it good...

Woundup may know what I mean... god on gov't ships there isnt a filter, vent or duct that does not have some form of blue filter material on it...

haha i know what you mean shawn, the rig splurged and bought filter media from MAN, stuffs already cut to size, haha probably costs 10 times as much!
