Two guys in a 16 ft boat sailboat from Scotland to Norway in 1964. The video is less than 30 minutes, simply incredible, very understated, anyone who has made a sea voyage must certainly appreciate this story, the video quality and style is old technology but the pluck of these two guys will live on for all time.

I watched that and enjoyed it very much but I havce to wonder if those guys were brave or maybe something else- really just a narrow miss. From the time of Jocque Cousteau and simple technology I can see how it would fascinate someone but the idea of a trip like that is almost insane looking back with todays world and technology in mind.

Used to watch this guy who had a show about the same kind of voyages and he was clearly a little nuts but entertaining as hell and always at sea. His attitude towards the world is what really drew me in. Alby Mangels Adventure Bound THE WHOLE SERIES - YouTube

Also reminds me of this guy who lived in Alaska alone for about 45 years- amazing story and ingenuity. There are more videos on youtube and owning the DVD is well worth it. Again, the way he describes each day/hour is pretty incredible. Alone in the Wilderness - YouTube

If you like those, read The Lone Voyager. It's about Henry Blackburn. Amazing story, he got lost from a Dory boat on the Grand Banks, rowed to Newfoundland, his Dorymate dead and his fingers frozen to the oars. Required reading if you know anything about Gloucester. I think this is where the Gloucester tough guy thing started. After that, with no fingers, he rowed/sailed across the atlantic two or three times in 16 foot boats, alone. Great read.

Lone Voyager: The Extraordinary Adventures Of Howard Blackburn Hero Fisherman Of Gloucester

by Joseph E. Garland

Like countless Gloucester fishermen before and since, Howard Blackburn and Tom Welch were trawling for halibut on the Newfoundland banks in an open dory in 1883 when a sudden blizzard separated them from their mother ship. Alone on the empty North Atlantic, they battled towering waves and frozen spray to stay afloat. Welch soon succumbed to exposure, and Blackburn did the...more

Dick Proenneke is a hero of mine, whenever something busts on the boat i always think "what would Proenneke do ??" He had quite a reputation around Fairbanks for being able to fix or make just about anything and that was before he moved out to the bush. Tuff son of a bitch to be able to move out there at 51. I never get tired of watching those movies.
Close as i've come to that lifestyle is when i spent some time at Rohn on a sheep hunt. Didn't get a sheep but had a great time out there.
