Are the AJ and TJ 28s dirfferent hulls?

I've been told the T Jason is a 28 Calvin Beal? True?

Is the AJ 28 the same hull ? The two hulls look different fron each other?

Curious?

Not to detour your thread... It would be great to have a referenece list of 28' models and their designers:

28' Terry Jason is a calvin design @ 25', then the hull was strechted to 28'. (I believe)

28' AJ ???

28' Bhm/Seaworthy: Spenser Lincoln
28' Wayne Beal:????
28' Northern Bay:????
28' CuttyHunk /Harris: Royal Lowell
28' Cape Dory/Nauset?????
28' Crowley Beal/Mussel Ridge????
28' Ellis????

Bill,
Not so sure about the hull itself, but I fairly certain the AJ build is 100% composite. To my issue, owning a 28 Jason....the AJ has no engine box and a center conpanionway.

BTW...Great thread

I believe the aj started out as a 26 Duffy. Eslang would know the story, he has spent a few $$$ with Mr. Johnson.

Alan used to finish 26 Duffys. He decided that there were shortcomings on the 26 hull. He designed his own 28. It is much larger than the 26 Duffy and is 100% composite build. With a 260 Yanmar, they cruise 20 kts at 5 gph

That is Correct. The Aj is all Alan Johnsons Design. Great 28 ft Boat. I had the pleasure of speaking with Alan and checking out his shop. That 28 is perfected to a T.

Aj 28

Having owned an AJ for about 5 years, Alan Johnson perfected the boat down to every detail. All components are molded, including the deck hatches, helm which by the way comes done and you have easy access to and the back panel as well. There is non-skid diamond built into the deck and pilot area. With a 260 Yanmar I cruised at 18.5 knots at around 6-7 Gallons per hour. The hull was corred and no wood. I will post some pictures an AJ. There is no engine box which is such a positive.

I am new to DE boats but have narrowed my search to a AJ28 with Yanmar 265....Since you own a AJ28, how do you think the overall quality & workmanship of the AJ28 compares to other classic DE boats in that size range? Thanks.

AJ

Alan Johnson perfected it. There is no wood, the finish is high end everything is molded, there is access to every thing on the boat, fuel tanks etc. The helm folds down for to access wires.

The boat has nice lines. But you have to look at stuff first hand. I liked it but prefer a larger boat than a 28ft I can do more with a bigger boat and feel more comfortable especially in a following sea. Depends on your use. (I would have liked the gunwhales to be higher in the boat.)

I would go for a slightly larger engine since I think mine was a little underpowered. A 315 Yanmar would serve you good. I cruised at about 18.0 knots at 3400 Rpms burning around 6-7 gallons per hour (4000 top). I rarely achieved 20 knots at cruise speed, maybe 19 knots at best.

I sold the boat in 2012, the new owner turned around and sold it to the present owner who seems to like it.

Thanks mfrench808 for your observations...I like the 315 Yanmar for a bit more power...

18 kts at 5-7 gph is great efficiency at a good clip! 4 miles per gallon ish.

How much do these boats weigh? Anyone have a hull pic?

We certainly are liking it, Matt!

The gunnel height is in my eyes the biggest knock on the boat- I'm 5'9" and along most of the cockpit's length it hits me just above the knee. I would have preferred if the cockpit floor was a bit lower- the scuppers are 6-8" off the water so there is room to go lower and if it meant a little bigger of a step up into the wheel house it would be well worth it. Our solution one day will be lee boards.

With that said, I think it is one of the best 28 footers around. Good construction, good ride, and no motor box!!
