Alternator producing 16+ volts

    today my alternator started smoking/burning and was producing 16 + volts. Battery alarm on Cummins gauges started beeping which brought the issue to my attention (as well as the smoke). Engine is a cummins qsb. disconnected the positive and negative connections and ran home on the batteries.


    Question: what makes an alternator produce excess volts? Will installing a new Alternator fix the issue?

    You might try to find a place that will bench test it for you, here in Annapolis a local battery warehouse tests them for free.

    If it got hot enough to cook the varnish off of the stator, It will not last long in the salt air. The 22SI has an internal regulator, and must be disassembled to replace.

    If you want to take a drive down to Quincy Ma. Tom @ A1 battery & electric will diagnose it in no time. If it’s not worth rebuilding/fixing ide bet he has a new one on the shelf.
    His shop is close to the Fore River Bridge on the Quincy side.

    The boat is in Gloucester. I pulled the Alt today and taking it to a shop in Ipswich. We will see what happens from there. thank you
