Questions about anchoring.

Is anyone ever amazed that it actually works? I always loved staring at the anchor on our ships in 60' of clear water. Sure the anchor holds the chain, the chain holds the ship, some crap like that. To me its almost PFA. I saw thru bolt the anchor to the bottom of the ocean, that will make me sleep at night.

I always have two anchors on my boat, one for anchoring as part of safety gear and then second for fishing.

On my safety gear anchoring thinking about getting the nylon plait. Reason being I can put it down the pipe and not worry about thick 5/8" jamming up as it comes out. Does that stuff remain soft throughout its life or no?

Secondly, wondering if I can get by using my 3/8" three stand with a 13lb anchor for fishing in less than 50' of water for FISHING ONLY. Its alot easier to haul up and down, over the rail etc. I cant imagine why not, not like your depending on it for life/safety/ etc.

The boat is a RP35 that weighs in about figure 10 tons.

5/8" 3-strand with about 30 feet of chain on the end of it with a 40 lbs danforth. I've torn out of so much damn seabed it's pathetic so now when I want to be in a spot, I stay in the spot.

Hauler cries a little bit when the chain starts to rattle through it, but no big.

Okay, I will bite... The floating line, to keep it out of the propeller? But doesnt it add just a little bit of bouyancy and take away from the anchor? Maybe its only me, but why do I think from the chain up would want to try to float... Again, you've done it and I am sure it works...

BTW, I have a freaking 600' spool of 3/8" or 1/2" floating line in my basement I dont know what the hell to do with... Maybe it will be for that...

I use 3/8 pot warp as well. Have never had an issue with it. Like you do I have another anchor on board for saftey and anchoring over night. But the hook I use for fishing is 3/8 with 30' of chain on a 20 lb danforth.

A 13lb anchor may work fine in good weather but when the wind comes up it will have a hard time holding. Nothing worse than having to pull in the lines to reset the anchor.

Your safety gear is fine so no need to discuss it. 3/8 anchor line for bottom fishing is plenty strong. Plus it stores easier, floats less & gets to the bottom quicker. My safety anchor is a Hi Tensile. However for bottom & wreck fishing I prefer a standard hook with extra chain. On a slip or wreck snag. Standard anchors are easier to bend out and straighten later. I carry the line in baskets with shackles on both ends. When I Canyon fish I shackle 3- 600’ length of 3/8s together & pull it with two poly balls. On deep water drops I always use a poly painter leader with a stop buoy. In the event I have to move quickly I can leave the gear behind and get it later.

Thanks, thats exactly what I do for anchoring for tuna. I've never anchored in the canyons ...

Funny but my inshore anchoring line becomes my harpoon line in the summer... there you go...

Shawn,

Since we are talking anchoring again. If you are wreck fishing or on bottom with boulders, this is how to rig your anchor to get it back.

Yes I have a couple anchors in wrecks...

Frigate, read about that on a few things. Want to just spell it out at a little bit. The twine on will break under the pressure in the opposite direction and then anchor will lift out to the forward right?

I know it has to be me but I've had it with danforths. I've switched to a bruce anchor & it's awesome. Definetly 3/8 line. It stretches more & gives you an elastic effect with less transfer to chain & anchor. I use 40' of 5/16 chain on my 34' boat and a 22# bruce w/ a 600' shot of 3/8.

I will say this and discredit me I swear that West Marine anchors DO NOT take well to the ground. I dont know what it is but swear by this. I then picked up a Super Hooker I think it was at another marine store and wow, set everytime and almost right away. The West Marine would hold but not GRAB if that makes sense. In my hand I would let it out and feel it hit the bottom and basically set it. I've done this for so many years this way. We'll that west marine anchor would skip skip skip and grab. That Super Hooker would just take almost right away. There wasnt anything different or anything, just attached it to the end of the same chain and fished the same ground.

Kinda funny but it almost seemed like the flukes were sharper not sure if it was me or that was true. I am going to go with that in the future. The only thing that gets me is if that safety anchor is being used one day, throw out last minute to stop me from going on the rocks... I want that go grab the first time.

Oh yeah, I will probably find out its all the same maker, just all me...lol
