I worked a fuel dock for 8 years in HS & college, and looking back I consider myself lucky nothing like this ever happened on my watch. I was always a little nervous every time a "new" inboard gas boat pulled up....never know who you're dealing with.
I had a friend of mine go for a ride on his wife's friends boat one summer
they went to gas up. after filling up they pulled away from the gas dock and made it 1/4 mile before the engine cover that he was sitting on blew up and he landed in the water after some time in the air looking down at the boat.
he was lucky no injuries and while in the water watched the boat burn to the water before someone picked him up. operator got burned pretty bad.
Bumped into an old friend from the way back machine recently at a local fuel dock. He was "gassing" up and I stepped aboard to shake his hand and before I knew it I was poking around and he had finished fueling, fired up his engine and "then" turned on the blowers! Holy crap .. don't know how he's alive today. I'm still shivering!
