Right, but how do you tell? I have the same question.
Do they make brass shafts? I’ve never heard of it, I imagine it doesn’t have the strength needed. It visually looks like bronze, brass is yellow. This shaft has some red color in it and the patina is just like all the other bronze I’ve been around.

Back in the day of wooden boats it was a known fact that builders would use brass above the waterline and bronze below. Brass was cheaper but is a mixture of copper and Zinc. And as we all know zinc is used on the underwater hardware as a sacrificial anode. Here is some info on the difference; Difference Between Copper, Brass and Bronze | Metal Supermarkets.

I had a boat with a stainless steel sea chest. Someone added brass elbows . They looked ok until I tried to tighten one. It quickly turned to mush.

Brass is not bronze.
