I agree that could be true, but I have looked at a number of these vintage installs, and the comments in the ad sound ominous.

I know. I said nay nay to a nice BHM 28 with one because it smoked so bad my family would have disowned me. Plus I would have regretted it. I have to work on a dragger for 22-25 days a year too, so I can take diesels, but that is one I rather not take, ever.

The cloud on cold weather startup was so bad it enveloped an entire marina. Thick blue/white smoke, that eventually got whiter, and after the sea trial got much less but never went away. If you want a pleasant clear day on the water, this engine is probably not a great choice.

I have a 41a in my BHM 28 and she does smoke a bit on start up, but not much after that. Smells like any other diesel exhaust when running so does not really bother me. Mine has just over 2000 hrs and runs great... also very efficient at under 4 GPH average over the entire season. I would not let it deter you too much if you find a boat that fits your budget/ needs, but that is just my opinion FWIW

I have to wonder about the fuel quality and maintenance practices on these “smokers” you guys are talking about. A lot of boaters ignore the air filters. When were the injectors last serviced? Valve adjustment? And etc. If I am not mistaken that is a 5 liter engine. At 200 hp you are at close to a commercial rating I would guess. So maybe instead of a 50K repower we are talking 20k in backlogged maintenance. Not trying to argue or debate just another perspective. I want to put a Yanmar 8LV in one of these things in the worst way!
