Hey guys,

Getting some quotes for insurance for charter boat. Has anyone ever used Berkley Offshore? Set value on boat of $45,000. Will get that up to $65,000.0 with new survey this April. $1,000,000 limit. Medical payments at $5,000. Personal effect at $2,500.00. $1,000 towing and assistance endorsement. Whole policy is $1,675.00. Any comments. Any experience with Berkley? Paul Nowak is the agent. Finck & Perras Marine Ins. Seems like a real nice guy. Thanks

Don’t know the price as I don’t run charters, but Brendan Crawford with Carey Richmond & Viking is a great guy to deal with and can write you any policy you need for any type of work. He worked in a boatyard and knows this industry, he insures lots of the charter boats around here.

PM me if youd like his contact info, I don’t want to put it out in the open on the internet

His quote was lower than my current on the Dyer by about $400, but would require a survey. Since I'm kind of looking to sell it decided not to go with it, but was very competitive.
a survey would be nice to have if your selling it? Have serious buyers with deposits get access to it.

Down here a survey is good for 5 years insurance wise. And I would think it would be helpful if you were going to sell the boat.

Just went through this last year looking for a commercial policy for tours on a 38' boat. We had a "Pleasure" policy for $1,200 but then they wanted a survey and boosted us up to $2,200 for one year (until we get the survey done). We started with a value of $279k but the new survey may value her at $400k after the refit & new engine. So.... we started looking at Commercial quotes with $1,000,000 Liabiity (the minimum amount the marinas needed to pick up passengers). We got half a dozen quotes between $4,200 and $7,500 per year. Ouch. We said "The hell with it" and decided just to operate for pleasure only. It just was not worth the expense with all the other things involved like advertising, maintenance, prep, and wear & tear on our vessel.

The 5k med pay limit is reasonable, in context. That coverage is basically “no-fault” coverage; I.e., the injured person doesn’t have to sue to get up to that amount of medical expense paid for. Beyond that amount, up to the per-claim limit, your Protection and Indemnity (“liability”) policy will apply and is designed to protect the insured (including the vessel herself) from liability for claims within the scope of the policy and not excluded by a written exclusion, up to the policy limits.
