At what point would one consider either freshening up, new shortblock or a repower for a cat 3208TA 375hp in a down east boat?

I seem to come across a fair share of boats with what seems like very high hours to me. Going for big bucks.

Holy crap!

I know there is no rule of tumb but there has to be a general guideline no? Id hate to spend a huge amount of money then have to go for a repower etc.

The 3208 are great motors. There is no rule of thumb on when to do a Freshen up. I would stay if you have a 3208 with 6,000 hours that has never been apart do the following:
Remove the heads & send the out. A head gasket failure on a 3208 is the kiss of death. By the time you realize the gasket is blown the block gets scared fro from the cross fire and she is toast. Head gasket replacement is very key on the 3208.
Short block itself. Leave the bearing pistons etc alone they will last for 12,000 +
Change the pan they rust out.
Heat exchanger clean out always a must

Larry's certainly correct.
Also, with non commercial diesels it's all about "marine age", not so much engine hours. Watch the aftercooler and the heat exchanger....

Cat says the injectors should be changed every 2000 hrs. Didn't know that until I had a retired cat mechanic work on mine.

He also told me not to put the cat antifreeze in the 3208. Use a regular 50/50 mix with a regular rust inhibitor.

Every 2000 is the recommended. You can get double that life no problem. Antifreeze is very key us theirs it is the best. If you mix 50/50 Use Distilled Water. CAT also sells it premixed.

For really good info on the subject, join Boatdiesel.com for 25.00/yr. LOTS of great info on all marine diesels. Not trying to take business away from DE forum but the BD forum specializes in just marine diesels and I've found it worth the 25 bucks!

Damn i almost had a heart attack reading this. My 3208t has 2800hrs on her and i have never done injectors. Then larry you chimed in and revived me.

Question whats the tell tale sign as to when its time to replace injectors?

The way it was explained to me, the inhibitors in cat antifreeze don't do well in 3208 engines. There is a cat bulletin on the subject.
Just repeating what a 30 year retired cat mechanic told me.
