Looking hard at a 32' 2004 DE with this engine and a recently replaced main oil seal. With only 200 hrs, am I looking at a bad engine (and need for re power)? What are the likely causes of the need for this repair on a low hour engine?

Thanks,

The Cummins 6BTA 330 is a rock solid engine with great record.
The 6B family of engines number in the millions.

I've owned four 6BTA 370s. Great engines period.

Assuming that the engine was new and the hours are accurate IMO the seal failing was a "fluke" as in sometimes new engines need warranty work.;)

Or maybe the engine's crankcase was not "properly vented" as Traditions mentioned. In any event a rear main seal leak is not a common "leak" in a 6B.

If you like the boat and the engine is otherwise "like new" I would not walk away from a replaced rear main seal.

FWIW,

Closing out thread. Someone else beat me on contract for the boat. There was a lot of fresh white paint on the Cummins leading me to conclude that more than the main end bearing seal was replaced.
