Dumb question I know, but whats the difference between a novi hull and a down east. What's the pros and cons of each hull?

Novi's have a "whale back" on their bow and doesn't have the fluid flowing sheer line that a Downeast hull has.
Due to this huge bow the pilot house is raised, giving "more room" below deck, but it's kind of a false thing. If you raised a Downeast the same way you would gain space below the deck as well.

Novi's cannot be documented here in the States (aside from a very small few different circumstances which are more trouble than they are worth).

Not as fast, not as pretty.

That smartass kid on show wicked tuna runs a Donnell, just wondering how he can in American waters with the Jones act. I believe a Donnell is a no I built boat. I probally don't understand the Jones act correctly though and I'm probally way off.

I think it's state registered. Donelle is Canadian, but not a Novi.

Its debatable imo with look betterif you are talking the old wood boats.. Some of those novi boats were as pretty as a picture. Today boats... Maine boats look wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than novi boats. Maine boats go wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy faster than novi boats.Novi boat are made to hold weight and be fuel efficient. Novi boats use to be wayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper. Half the things that made novi boats desirable no longer exists.

The Jones Act applies more towards for hire Charter Boats. I don't think the pin head has a captain license but I could be wrong.

Canadian-built boats can be state registered and chartered, but you will not be eligible to get a COI to carry more than 6 passengers.

Tyler on the Pin Wheel fishes LEGALLY with his Donelle and does have a captains license.

His Donelle is a great sea boat, just not that fast. Little narrow compared to downeasts the same length, but its great on fuel and eats any seas.

novis rule....if you dont mind 9 knots and if someone tells you there novi is faster they are being dishonest or are burning 20 gallons a hour. i have a 45 x 18 and averaged under 5 gallons of fuel per hour for the whole fishing year towing mobile gear

Curious as to the fuel efficiency... Is it because your going slow or the design. I mean in my RP if I want to do 8 knots I am burning 1GPH... maybe 1.1...

<--- Looks like that

Its a 96 RP 35, with a Cummins 430 in her, 1.86ZF gear.

I picked her up in November and fish until mid December chasing cod and messing around. I put in about 70 hours doing the 8kt bit. When I was by myself I ended up doing alot of fishing at 8kts because it meant I could go cod fishing for $40 a day. Call me crazy but I had nothing else to do so it was perfect timing to head out there and learn the boat. At about 14 knots, she seems to burn about 10GPH but only have 14 hours at that speed to survey.

It was the old Christie Lynn out of Lindenhurst.
