DE Boats - Magazine Article

I came across this article about DE boatbuilding in MDI and thought you guys would appreciate it. Note the definition of a DE boat. I know this has been an ongoing thread for awhile.

I guess we need some new catagorys like DE wanabees and down east copycats. I am having a semidisplacement wood epoxy boat built in the northwest by a builder who built a boat that sure looks like it came from Maine what do we call this one?

Doesn't that have an out drive in it???

Sam Devlin if I'm not mistaken. Just read an article in wooden boat about him.

But I/O = No DE.

Plans were drawn with out drive but boat built with inboards in cockpit boxes. Runs very sweet just like a DE should.Yes it is a Devlin boat called Storm Petrel. Unfortunetly her owner just died unexpectedly.

Having twins must change the center of gravity quite a bit.

I suspect CG goes up a bit. The equal and lateral weights should be ok like lateral fuel tanks. Hard to say how that will affect boats motion as I understand it is pretty complex and sometimes art trumps scince in that regard. In my new build the twin motors are also boxed. A full weight study was done to balance all out and the CG is still pretty low.The depth of motor may also be different in built up or down hull and the shallower hull would be more akin to the Storm Petrel.
