Anyone know about this Delorme Inreach system. Saw it at West Marine today and been thinking about it... Standard texts of course helps, kinda of pricey too. I have a Sat. Phone, need to look into SMS with them. I just think it would be good to send detailed messages home, about shopping lists so wife could meet me down there, etc.

Myself and a buddy both have them and used them last summer on tuna trips. He's got the newer version with the screen, I have the older one that's essentially a little box with a couple buttons. Both sync with your smartphone so I saved some $$ going with the older model. Works great texting as well as for tracking purposes offshore.

You can setup your own delorme tracking site that is password protected then send the link and PW to any buddies you might network with. I've been out on a decent bite and sent the numbers to friends that haven't left the dock yet.

Obviously it's also nice to be able to let those at home know if you're running late, etc.

You can suspend service in the offseason and then pick up where you left off when the water shows up.

I have a small boat and only run limited offshore trips so it's a decent alternative to a sat phone for me.

Im still interested in it... but doubt it meets the requirement in the eyes of the USCG. So will still carry sat phone. I like the idea of the Iphone attaching to it.

I have one on my short list of emergency equipment adds. I like the fact that service is through Iridium and there's a pay as you go option.
