New to the forum and really have been enjoying all of the information and knowledge here. I've been looking for a downeast boat in the 28 foot range with a diesel and like the layout without an engine box, just a step into the helm.
Is there a new diesel engine, that meets the current environmental regulations, that is equal or less in height than the Yanmar 315 or 370?

The new Yanmar 8LV 320/370 is a V8. Check out the drawings at Yanmar Marine.com

When I was comparing engine heights last year I found that low to high profiles were

Yanmar, FPT/Iveco, Cummins... all three plus or minus 3 or 4 inches.

Go over to boatdiesel forum. ALL engines' dimensions are in the library.

Take a peek.

Thank you both for the input and the link, looking to see what kind of HP will fit below the deck. Also what the recommended HP would be for a AJ 28.
Thanks

28 AJ pushes very fine at 18 knots with the Yanmar 6BY260. The motor fits under the deck with good access.

Thanks for the info, I did visit and talk with Alan, we took out his boat with a 315 Yanmar in it, it moved along well. He is a very nice, knowledgeable guy.
With the new tier 3 regulations he can not use the 315 or the 370, just trying to get some feedback from people that have run the boat. I have had boats in the past that were under powered and want to avoid that. Is there a good option for more HP and if there is would it be used or is it just overkill?

In my opinion
Right around 300 hp is perfect for that boat
The 260 was fine but the 315 would have been perfect
I think Alan would tell you the same
I rode on one that had the 370
It was an animal!! Really really fast!!

Youngbrothers, and Calvin Beal are the only way to go.
I reccomend the FPT (eveco) NEF 67-450 it is aprox. 2 inches shorter than the Yanmar 6lya. You have an FPT dealer right in Yarmouth.

Thank you SameDirection, Yes Yankee Marina and Boatyard is a FPT dealer. The NEF 67-450 is available from 350 to 450 hp.
Here is the link for more info http://www.mshs.com/pdf/brochures/FPT/NEF/FPT_N67-450.pdf

Any additional questions can be answered by Jerry Farnham at Yankee Marina 207-846-4326 or [email protected]
Hello all,

The NEF 450 has been superseded as an engine family by the NEF 570 Tier 3 engine. We only have ratings down to 450 Mhp in this family in this moment. We should have new ratings below in this coming year. We also offer FIAT Industrial engines maranized by FNM in the 3.0L displacement range. In the same area that Jerry provided a link for, there is information about the FNM 300, which is a 4 cylinder common rail FPT engine that makes 295 hp @ 4000 rpm. The base engine is the same engine that is used for the IVECO Daily and the Ducato which is replacing the Sprinter for Chrysler in the U.S.

Hello, there is also a very good condition used NEF 450 and reverse gear on this site for sale by F/V Destiny and I have seen this engine and boat and know some of the history. It is worth looking into with Mike. Give him a ring if you are interested in the FPT/Iveco product. There are many different ratings that can be flashed onto the ECU if you are not interested in 450 Mhp.

That engine is a monster and will be a tough fit in a 28' boat.

Not many 28's will take an engine under the deck. AJ28 is the only one that comes to mind.

YankeeFPT:

I just looked at the web pages of your recent project.

I wonder, did you do anything about the root cause of the rusty turbo? The most likely reason is seawater back up through the exhaust system due to the low clearance of the exhaust elbow above the waterline.

I suspect that you can't make the exhaust elbow any higher due to deck height limitations, but you can put an equalizing drain on the lift muffler to keep water from building up and overflowing the elbow.

A check valve after the muffler was installed. I will put a link to the actual product soon. I can't let my wife catch me working of the clock on Thanksgiving. :-o
