A friend of mine needs to re-power an old 36', single engine, heavy displacement (13k lbs), wood lobster boat.
The boat is in Maine and will be used for summer recreation -- no need to go real fast -- just reliably.
He was given these various diesel engine choices by the service shop .
Price range was comparable for all except the Lugger, which was about twice the cost of the others - ??.

Problem - neither of us know anything about marine diesels.
Do any of you folks with a knowledge of marine diesel engines have opinions about these engines ?

Cummins 240hp 6BT210 no gear
Deere 265hp SFM50 #3 gear included
Deere 231hp 6068AFM75 no gear
Volvo 200hp TAMD41 gear included
Volvo 218hp D4-225 no gear
Yanmar 220hp 6BY2-220 gear included
Lugger 185hp L1066A no gear

Chugger,

Any of the marine diesels you mention are good power plants.
I'm partial to the Cummins line of 6Bs

I'm on my 2nd pr. of 6BTA 370s.
The 6BT @ 220 hp is a sweet motor.
Last you for ever with routine maintenance and service.
Parts are cheap and Cummins service is readily available.

What does the 36 ft wood lobster boat have for power now ??

FWIW,

The JD 6068AFM75 at 230hp(6.8 Litter disp) is probably a M1 or M2 ratting and is common rail fuel injection. With a diffderent chip Hp can go up for recreational use to 330 or higher. This is not a light weight motor prob 1,7oolb or more I have this motor in my new build. I would have also gone with cummins but service from main dist. in our area was piss poor.

All good power planets. The harder choice will be the gearing of the motor. You will need to know the maximum size propeller that will fit and the shaft size that the boat has before making a final choice.

If I had to guess on this boat I would guess it has a 1.5 shaft & can swing a 24 propeller. This is all my guess work.

Next some more guess works. My choices in order of preference:

Deere 265hp SFM50 #3 gear included should have a 2:0 gear
Deere 231hp 6068AFM75 no gear will need a 2:0 gear
Cummins 240hp 6BT210 no gear will need a 2:0 gear
Yanmar 220hp 6BY2-220 gear included should have 2:5 gear
Volvo 200hp TAMD41 gear included not sure on gearing
Volvo 218hp D4-225 no gear not sure on gearing

The Lugger, Deere and Cummins motors are heavy duty, big iron in that order . The Volvo and especialy the Yanmar are light duty, recreational.

None of these will come close to planing the boat at cruising power settings, so firgure on going slow and saving fuel. A Cummins factory remanned 6bt210 would be my choice.

Thanks everyone for all your advice thus far. A really big help !
I'm not sure how the boat is currently powered - I have asked the owner, but he is traveling, and has not responded yet.

I had 2 D-4 260's in my Carolina Classic's. Wonderful electronic engines, small, quiet and still smokeless and leakless at 2900 hrs but....

The D-4 225 is the wrong engine for a boat your size. IF you were serious about a Volvo the D6-280 is commercially rated and would be better Volvo for the application.
