Hello to all,
I just joined this site and can tell very quickly that I will learn a lot from here. I fish Long Island mostly the Moriches Area. Early fall I had the opportunity to run my boat for a week out of Montuak with my son. After many years of research I purchased a 23 ft. Jones Brother Cape Fisherman. I can not be any happier with the great running boat. I currently posses a 6 pack license but would not dare charter because I do not feel confident I can put my fairs on fish as consistently as I might want outside of the fall run in Montuak. My dream is to retire within the next 10 to 15 years purchase my dream boat 28 ft Seaworthy BHM and charter enough to afford the expenses of the vessel. I feel by that time I will have put in my time on the water and learned the proper etiquette. This isn't just a pipe dream for me... I looking forward to learning as much as I can from this website

It's good to hear someone say they want to put their time in before launching a charter fishing business.

Welcome aboard Captain, I am a charter boat owner who fishes Stellwagen Bank for groundfish and tuna for the last 12 years. Relentless Charters Tough way to make a living but you are in a good area with many species allowing you to fish year round or just about. Lots of knowledge on here with some great folks. Don't be afraid to ask questions and once again welcome aboard.

I have been the client of many charter captains in the last 18 years. I have seen the good, bad and the lazy. I have seen the change in myself when the fishing trip goal was to put someone who has never caught a striped bass on a fish. I have 15 years boating/fishing experience inshore. My offshore has been limited due to my prior vessel's range a 26 ft Grady. I look in awe as the Montuak Fleet exits the harbor. I retire in anywhere 10 to 15 yrs which should give me more than enough time on the water. I look for the charter business to sustain my expenses of the vessel and keep me on the water. How better than with a 28 BHM right?

I would believe that a 31'BHM would give you and your passengers much more room and comfort. They will handle a pretty heavy sea and remain quite stable.

I see the photos of these 28' boats on here and it reminds me how big a 31/32 BHM is. Of course it takes more fuel to propel her a comparable distance and she's not going to win any races. But she will hang with some much bigger non-downeast boats when conditions turn sour.

My advice to you would be to get all the open acess federal permits you can and try to put together some history. Without these permits you will be shut out of the industry. Good luck with your dream!

Reelsportfisher,
Not to sound ignorant but when reviewing the federal permits most require that you already possess one am I incorrect? Or was I maybe looking at the wrong thing.. I assume a multi species is what you were referring to.

Since I own a 28 Seaworthy (BHM) and charter I can probably answer this better than most here.

The good,
The boat is a beautiful looking boat (I get compliments all the time)
The boat is big for a 28 !
The boat is very cheap to run (fuel)
The boat eats up a head sea
The boat @ 28ft expenses are lower than a 31-35ft which is typical size for 6 pack charter boats

The bad,

The boat can be tricky in a following sea, especially from the corner.
The boat despite some claims of 20kts was designed to run 14-16 kts
The boat has an engine box !!!

I've owned mine for 5 years.
For what I do for charters the boat is awesome. 90% of my trips are inshore striped bass trips in Boston harbor. In 5 years I've never had to cancel an inshore trip because of weather with blowing up to 30kts.
The boat is tight for 6 passengers & crew of 2, but for my inshore trips in Boston harbor it's fine, offshore trips to say Stellwagen Bank, it's tight !
If you plan to charter my opinion an open winterback is a must, or 2/3 open in my case. When I bought mine 5 years ago 1st thing I did was stare at the stb side for a few days at the dock, spent another 1/2 day measuring then removed windows, all hardware ect.... then taped off and scribed my cut and took a skill saw to the stb side, framed with stainless angle and hung the side on a large piano hinge and made up hardware to lock it up in the open & closed position. This gave me 2 additional fishing spots for bottom fishing & drift fishing.
The next year after dealing with people ALWAYS standing in the center sliding doorway I got out the skill saw again and cut open the winterback and made a nice set of bifold doors, MUCH easier to move around the boat and can lock it up when I go home.
My opinion, the biggest downside of the boat if you plan to charter is the engine box.
Charters need to sit down somewhere, and when it's raining, it's inside.
I spent $ on a nice cushion for my box and trust me, no one wants to sit on the engine box for any extended period of time. They need to sit somewhere they can lean their back against something.
The box makes it very hard to move around the wheelhouse also.
Another thing about the box it makes it next to impossible to install a nice comfortable helm seat as you need to climb over the box to get to the seat (I'm sure Hooper will agree with this as thats how his "Fair Tide" was set up.
Looking back, before I bought mine I was really considering a late 80s 35 Duffy that I could have bought for 30-35K less than I paid for BHM.
There are LOTS of days I wish I bought that boat instead but there I plenty of other days when I'm at the fuel dock & am happy I used a lot less fuel than a Duffy would.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Raider Ronnie, Thank you for your first hand knowledge. I really appreciate it. In the future I believe I will be doing some of the same type charters, mostly inshore trips for bass with the occasional offshore trip. Can you post some pics. of your vessel.
