I'm an old man now and have been on the water all my life. Always knew when I was looking at a "Downeaster" but I really don't know why. Do they have to be built in NE? Do they have to have a large keel? Do they have to have a an inboard? In the old days we referred to them as "Maine built". Obviously they are not all built in Maine. What makes a Downeaster in your mind?

I don’t really know either, but I’m a keel man. When I see a nice deep protected keel with a single screw I’m always intrigued. I’ll leave it to the Mainers to sort out the details as they know best.

I like to keep it simple, the boat is built in downeast Maine.

the term has become perverted over the past decade or so after the traditional lobster boat hull became very popular, and some production manufacturers tried to cash in on the term "downeaster" to sell boats that aren't really the genuine article.

For my money, a traditional lobster boat hull has a sweeping sheer from bow to stern, with a plumb bow, a full keel/skeg and a single propeller protected by the skeg. I'd also say that the traditional hull has soft chines.

Nowadays you could open that definition up as traditional lobster boat builders have put either twin engines into larger hulls, sometimes shaving the keel/skeg to get additional speed, or outboards on the smaller boats, also shaving the keel.

And you can take it even further now that Wesmac has added lifting strakes to the bows of some of their boats to gain additional speed, and of course the hard chines (which have been added by other builders as well--the "Dean" of Lobster boats, Spencer Lincoln, is a known proponent of the hard chine).

So, it's hard to define for sure.

But that would exclude General Marine, Northern Bay, Mussel Ridge, and a few others.
A real Downeast hull would be designed by anybody with the last name Frost, Lowell, Beal, Libby, Jones, Barlow, Hutchinson, Wessex, Kass, and there are a few more I am sure I am missing. Lobster boats...or Downeasts have changed a lot since conception. Evolution driven by the needs of the consumer have changed a lot of the design in some hulls. More modern DE’s have less or no tumble home. When I was 12 (1991) 38 feet was huge and 25 knots was fast.

I even believe that Atlas Boat Works in Cape Coral, Florida makes a true downeast boat. It would look right at home in Stonington, Me with the diesel inboard or even the new outboard one- see my Avatar. The Mainship Pilot 34 probably qualifies as a downeaster if you just base the definition on design style and not who or where it is built ;-).

To me, what determines a downeast boat is below the water line. There are many boats that look like a downeast above the water line, they claim to be a downeast boat, but they are just a regular deep V hull below the water line; there for not a downeast in my opinion.

The attached is not my creation. I complied it from many sources over time and included some of my thoughts as well. However, I do think it describes what is a Downeast boat. If you recognize any of the text as yours please feel free to claim it!

Interesting discussion. I asked this question on classicshamrock.net forums also. The core group there, while not owning Downeasters, are savy boat people with an appreciation for classic lines. Not just people who own boats. I don't know how to upload from one to the other. Maybe someone here can. Forums, General conversation, Downeasters post # 5. I too agree with Frank Grimes.

Should we add a few more designers/builders? Bunker, Ellis, Stanley, Rich, Holland, Pettegrow, Spaulding, Lincoln, White...

How about counting the Wilcox family, too. I have the only Wilcox 22 CC, that was the plug for the Midland 22.
