It was not a torpedo but a battery pack for one. Not sure why a boat that thinks they may have a torpedo on board would come into port.

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. --
A fishing boat pulled up the battery pack for a torpedo off Point Judith.
The Coast Guard said Thursday that the battery pack is from a modern torpedo and likely fell off a ship.
The pack has no explosive danger, but officials said it might be leaking a hazardous material because it's been in the water.
It will be put in a special canister for transport to Lockheed Martin in Boston.
The crew of the Galilee-based Hope & Sydney caught the 2-foot-long orange device on Wednesday while dragging for monkfish about 90 miles from shore.

isn't it great how I was told by the captain today it was a torpedo. Why the hell was there a cop at every intersection going out of there. And why the us coast guard escort? So if this thing was leaking I don't think I will be eating any monkfish this week or next. Thanks for the clarification.

Because the army has been known to dispose of certain biologically hazardous compounds in waters very close to where this part was found. Think about it, 2 foot long cylinder with military markings on it. Hmmmm.

It wasn't too l ong ago some boat hauled up mustard gas containers. That is childs play compared to some of the nerve agents that were dumped out there. Some of that stuff was short hauled to boot. Seems the barge operators thought "this is far enough" all on their own.

The CG couldn't know what the guy had. He probably called it in from the dock.

As for the cod, that is still discouraging. This time last year the hauls were hot and heavy. I'm not even a little bit tempted to put in early based on what I'm hearing.

Still time though.
