the boat is 31 Duffy finished by general marine. If you look back it has been on eBay 3 times. They had a good bid originally but I think they are just pissing people off by re listing it with a high reserve. I would be very careful about this one with there terms. Boats name should have something fishy with this hole deal of being donated.

66k sounds like a good deal on that boat. If it is a cored hull I would do a survey if I were you. It has good power and finished by a reputable finisher so you should ohave a boat that will last. Good luck!

Hello Im new to This forum and downeasterns in genral. Was once to owner of a 28 twin money burning sport fish. That was years ago and know the wife has the bug , and I plan on doing some light tuna / stripper fishing. Just put a deposit on this boat, They seem very legit, they are just not in the biz of selling donations of this size. I agreed on 66k , with 10% DOWN . Im flying down to take a look and speak to the boats mechanic. MAy have a survey done If any questions. Anyways its going to cost me another 3-4g total to get her home. With all the gear , electronics, extras etc I thought I did well but to be honest I realy didnt wheel and deal with any others. I dont like beating owners up. Please comment ,Value this forums opinion.

Robert,
From the photos you have a nice looking boat.

The Cummins 8.3 liter 450 6CTA is a very good motor. The engine is a commercial engine and is sleeved. Simple/mechanical, not a lot of hours on it and @ 450 hp in a 31 Duffy that "looks" to be built light you'll have plenty of "mojo". The engine looks clean. I'd like to see some closeup pics of the exhaust install...turbo,mixing elbow etc. The generator looks clean and I can't imagine it has a lot of hours on it.

When you see the boat in person post the serial number of the Cummins off of the data tag. I'll (we'll) run the numbers for you. During survey make sure the engine starts easily from stone cold and make sure it reaches rated rpm (2600). If you buy the boat you can work on getting the boat/engine/prop packaged dialed in later.

If you buy the boat we (forum members) can give you a hand on a maintenance plan to get the Cummins "up to snuff". I would do a complete go through (not expensive) of the sea water cooling side of the engine, aftercooler maintenance, double checking the exhaust was installed properly. There may be be a couple of minor upgrades to the engine that would benefit you going forward. You'll also want to get the engine "seeing" 2700 rpm WOT (100 over rated). The engine will thank you many thousands of hours down the road.

Again, nice looking boat, a bow thruster to boot, good luck with it if all goes well.

I read over the spec sheet. It states "fiberglass hull". Being a 1999-2000 build one was suppose "solid glass". You may want to check the build out with general Marine.

For what it's worth, Bill D

Duffy

If you got this boat for 66,000 add another 20,000 for all the crap you will endure, and you still got a Great Deal !
Check the core, if cored !

Question?

Would General Marine have been building balsa cored hulls back in 1999-2000.
Who would have "layed up the hull" of a 31 Duffy for Genenral marine back then ?

Excellent reply ! You got me. Mine is a 31[32] 1982 BHM Solid Glass Hull. 1" thick. Just drilled out the bottom for drain plug. Older cores need to be checked however. Not to say the new ones don't.

I think almost all the builders were offering cored hulls in 1999-2000..i was offered the option from Wayne Beal in 1996...but didnt go for it

cored

Very Good Choice !!!! Lots of horror stories of older and newer cored hulls. If not done right , they are not cored hulls, they are soggy hulls !

Planiing on having a survey done, for many reasons, ins mech, etc. For some piece of mind right off the bat, is there an easyway to tell if cored. Please remeber im formely of the cookie cutter commercialy built boats. This is why I found this site to begin with. Time for a real boat, just trying not to let the wallet do the learning.

Removal of a thru hull fitting below the water line or an transducer and you may be able to tell if the hull is cored.

Drilling a small hole would do it but the present owner "might get upset".

A surveyor may be able to tell.
