Engine -shaft coupler

What is the best out there, personal experience please.

Personally I like to have a transmission between my engine and the shaft, but I guess I'm just old fashioned...

I have always used split couplings, fitted and faced. I have used them with pins and without. I don't pin the couplings any longer per the machine shops request but the splits come apart nicely and you can slide them right off the shaft. If you do opt to pin the shaft just be sure to put a hose clamp around it so it does not come out and destroy something while its spinning.
