If I was to buy a used EPIRB that is curretly registered. Does I have to re-register it under my name/boat.

Thanks, Jack.

I have a used Eprib, 6yrold McMurdo type I. I was going to get a battery for it and a new hydrostatic. Ended up buying a new Cat II for $449 from Hamilton Marine. Battery was going to be $300 at LRSE, hydrostatic is $100-125 and/or a holder to make it a type II was $50 as well...

Yes the $449 one is good for up to 35' boats, manual release and is USCG approved.

Was wondering what the market was like for old EPIRBS... lol

I do think one company did offer free batteries when you bought it but forget who...

I guess with that in mind I will just be buying a new one. The market isnt good enough i guess. I saw a few for 250-300 that will need a new battery over the next year... Not worth it in my book. Thanks for the info everyone.

Same situation goes for used liferafts, especially if you are commercial.
After a raft is 2 years old from date of production repacks are every year after that 2, and the 5th is a major ($$$) one @ about $1200 average.

I had to replace an antenna, went into the marine safety store... Guy says, the battery's bad, 2 years old, same deal, 450 dollar unit. I don't think I had control on my face when he told me the same battery as I had was good for 5 years?!

So the 300 buck 5 year battery is good for 2 years? What?

Buy a new one.
