would it stop a slug?

I guess it might, my exhaust run is almost flat and I have never had a problem although I seldom anchor in a seaway or backdown on a fish. I have been through 2 hurricanes and countless Noreasters dancing on my mooring.

Salisbury muffler

Here's a photo of the Salisbury muffler I have. It's 10" long and has an inlet of about 6" in diameter. Not sure how effective it is for reducing noise level

The Salisbury exhaust cap that Brooksie has would definitely prevent a slug of water from racing up an exhaust pipe. They’re pretty rare and work well - a friend has one on his boat. The only catch is they “splutter” at idle making a bit of splashing.
