So today I was down looking at some Seaplast boxes and was just curious about making my own. I know you can just use the foiled foam at home depot right? How does something like that compare in cost as well as how good is it at holding ice? I have one Seaplast but need to get a couple more for next year. Looking for it for canyons and I guess bluefin too...

Anyone know of a good thread for this?

Thanks...

Hey Shawn I built one last summer and was able to use the Dow foam boards that are blue and foiled on one side. You can get resin to adhere to it and the have them at home depot up to 2" thick.

Any more details? I'd like to make an above deck box , glass and paint it.

Well Ok then you asked.....

I have a in the floor fish box that needed to be made larger. I made the box come up 30"above the floor and 84" long. I started with building a mold or jig to shape the box. Then cut out 1" nidacore glassed the outside and fastened it to the jig. Them I filled all the voids and glassed it again. Next I flipped it over and glassed in the foam boards. Two more layers of glass on the inside faired it and then glassed it down over the hole cut into the deck. I used 4 layers to tab it down to the deck and bolted it wheelhouse from inside the hold.i faired ithe outside again then gel coated it.

Some guys say just buy a commercial box....(Bonar or Exactics)...but building your own will allow you to get the exact size you need for your deck space...and i hate the tops on the commercial style boxes

I have a really nice one for sale holds 800-1000 lbs of ice midsummer for well over a week. Drains on both ends. Box is hinged in the middle and has 3 piece lock down on each side..I would add pictures if I knew how..holds 30-40 (50 60lb yellowfin ) cored..Will hold 80-90 inch bluefin with head and tail off..Makes a nice workstation.I'll try to take some pictures today..

Shawn what matters on mine on ice storage time is how much you open and close it. I have a very large opening in the stern to get giants in and out. If my crew opens it alot I can get about a week out of it. If the lid isn't opened every 5 minutes it lasts longer.

As far as cost go it cost way more to build it than it would have to buy the super sized plastic one.
