Installing new/more floodlights to top of wheelhouse on 35' H&H ... deciding between LED's (up to 150w) to run off house DC (2 8D's, 80amp alternator on 500 Yanmar) ... or considering running larger AC lights off a Honda 2k genset.
Thoughts on the newer, larger LED's, from the Magnalights ($$) on down to the Rigis Dually D2's?
Need to light up the night ...

Not sure how the herring like the LEDS', just go metal hallide...

However, I need some everyday LED's too, so I will watch this post. Sadly years ago just got the simple TACO ones which were great for a small boat on a small scale. Looked at others but I like seeing them in the hand first...

Alex, I run two 175w halogens and all my electronics from a honda 2k all night on one gal. of gas. This is pretty much the max for the 2k.

the lights are mounted on UHMW clips i fabricated to clip on my outriggers. with this I can swing the outriggers out over the water about 15' and have the light pointed straight down into the water. Works great and they are far enough away from the cockpit that there is not that blinding glare but a nice glow to work in.

You must have a GFI in there too

Do you have a picture of those clips? I like the idea of getting the light out and down.

Ok maybe I took some liberty in calling this a clip. Two blocks of plastic held together with wing nuts that I then drilled out would have been better.

you can get the UHMW from Mc Master Carr. this is 3/4"

When you cut and or drill UHMW be very careful ! That stuff will heat up, melt then grab and go flying. Clamping the block is a must. trust me I have 30 years of professionally cutting things and I am very careful w/ this and similar !

Aqua-Signal makes these beautiful 150 watt tungsten lights. They are just a bright a 600 watt Halogens that RAB and other make. The price is $300 each. All S/S & Powder coated vey high quality and a killer look. These lights have been on the boat for 6 years and they look new plus I still have the original bulbs in them.

So far I'm a big fan of the led's.

Here are pics of the rigid d2 dually diffused. The light is pure white, and its daylight in the cockpit.

They do wake you up in the morning.

They're nothing compared to the 20" light bar upfront - I could bling someone with that thing.

Honestly, we didn't put them on till late October, and I was only fishing the bay. So I didn't get a chance to see if they'll bring up the herring.

They throw enough light over the rails that I can't imagine they wouldn't.

if youre really trying to flood the night all around the boat its hard to compare leds to flood lights. 50,000 lumens reaches far and wide. if you have a 120v source get MH. Rab lights. floodinators in the tower. some pics back from the refit project....

I have 2 150w hps lights facing aft in the tower. 3 12v led lights on the roof for when Im not running the genny. this winter I want to remove the 2 150w lights aft and replace with 1 400w MH light, and also add 2 300w MH lights facing port/starboard in the tower. I want a lot of light forward for steaming offshore at night and spotting breakers.

the LEDs are bright enough for work on deck but not really flooding the surrounding water with light.
