Well, grouper has been opened since 5/1 and we finally got out a week or so ago to the 28F ledge for 2 days on my 26 seaway pilothouse.
Had to fight through 1000# of non-keepable but beautiful red snappers to get 18 grouper for 400#
Went out solo yesterday and made a 150 hook shark set. Had 1000# on a "stab" in the dark set. Sorry, I was too busy for pics..
Only took a few pics on grouper trip but here they are....Jo

Pretty fishing. A few years ago someone at NOAA said Red Snapper did not occur as far north as Hatteras, but everyone knows there are some nice ones here. Bottom fish management in the Southeast is so ridiculous. And up here offf Hatteras, Snowy Grouper get a reprieve b/c of the current running so hard, but we are stuck w/ the same Draconian reg's they come up with for the whole friggin' region. An in Virginia at the north end of the range for Snowies and Gray Tiles, and where there is no current, they get to hammer the shit out of them. Worst available science, right? At least they haven't completely shut you down. 10 boxes of Americans as bycatch. When will they get the point?

The powers that be decided to give us a 75 trip limit for a short time on Red Snapper so I decided to go try for grouper and let the 75# snapper cover my fuel cost.
Well, the grouper weren't home or not chewin at all but on the 1st stop we got our snapper limit and 3 nice scamp groupers. Rest of the 2 day trip was less than eventfull. Just kept chucking RS of 15-20 # each over the side and picking a few sf's (sellable fish). Unfortunately, a "broker" trip.
God bless the NMFS:mad:
Mike,(MDI45) the other pic is for you.......Jo
