As I was trained, gelcoat applied to an external hull only has a mechanical bond, you do not get the chemical bond like laying up in a mold. For that reason I would suggest you went with painting the hull. The primers and topcoats today are exceptional. I would suggest that you speak with the paint techs at the factory to help in any decision as to what to use. We redid an old Formula a few years back, Fighting Lady Yellow, two part polyurethane, rolled and tipped with 2 of us. The factory tech convinced us to not spray it and go the rolled and tipped. Like most paint jobs, prep is critical and thinning of the paint was critical. If you have any fabricators locally, we have also considered putting a wrap on a boat. You can get quite creative with the graphics. Around here it used to run around a hundred dollars a foot.Thx, my situation is that I want to gelcoat the whole hull. It is dark green. What I'm seeing is that dark green varies alot depending who makes it. I would like to get a color chart I can use to hold against the hull to compare...

The darker gel coats seem to tend to chalk and look like shit in short order. If I wanted dark green I would paint it. Lotta work re gelling something. Be a shame to do it and then be let down after spending all that time and money.Thx, my situation is that I want to gelcoat the whole hull. It is dark green. I see it's a 1 to 1 ratio. Does it change the gelcoat color?Add Duratec high gloss additive to your gelcoat, iirc it’s 904-001. Makes it shine like paint
I go 3:1 for the first couple coats just to build up the film thickness then final coat 1:1. Does not change the colorI see it's a 1 to 1 ratio. Does it change the gelcoat color?
