We used to order custom tints according to what the customer provided for a color match. Minimum 5 gallon pail at the time. We provided three Alexseal paint color chips to one customer to match his Hatteras, he decided which one matched best. If we do a repair on something now, we try to get the original gelcoat from the boat manufacturer. I do note that many of the small white gelcoat repairs like scratches we were able to use our standard Viking White (Viking Yachts) and you couldn't tell on white boats, but all other colors needed a good match. We never tinted anything critical in-house, always left it to the pros.

Thx, my situation is that I want to gelcoat the whole hull. It is dark green. What I'm seeing is that dark green varies alot depending who makes it. I would like to get a color chart I can use to hold against the hull to compare...
As I was trained, gelcoat applied to an external hull only has a mechanical bond, you do not get the chemical bond like laying up in a mold. For that reason I would suggest you went with painting the hull. The primers and topcoats today are exceptional. I would suggest that you speak with the paint techs at the factory to help in any decision as to what to use. We redid an old Formula a few years back, Fighting Lady Yellow, two part polyurethane, rolled and tipped with 2 of us. The factory tech convinced us to not spray it and go the rolled and tipped. Like most paint jobs, prep is critical and thinning of the paint was critical. If you have any fabricators locally, we have also considered putting a wrap on a boat. You can get quite creative with the graphics. Around here it used to run around a hundred dollars a foot.

Fibreglast. They use the RAL color matching system and it works very well.

How are you going to go at that? Prep, spray, and polish/buff sort of thing?

The darker gel coats seem to tend to chalk and look like shit in short order. If I wanted dark green I would paint it. Lotta work re gelling something. Be a shame to do it and then be let down after spending all that time and money.

Find me a 10 year old dark color gel coated boat that looks nice still. Maybe i am wrong.

Apologies to the OP for the derail. Has anyone used Epifanes. I’ve decided to go with 2 part poly on the interior to save time. I know you get what you pay for but it seems cheaper than alexseal.

Add Duratec high gloss additive to your gelcoat, iirc it’s 904-001. Makes it shine like paint

A word of caution on using Duratec high gloss. Go to boat design.net and read posts about it from a guy named ondarv. I found it’s a very finicky product.
