would have done better to just push it off stern and have crew jump in and swim to it if still floating.

Ok, so what did they do wrong specifically? I have zero experience with ships, how do you launch a boat while underway. It would seem from both videos that the boats were running and powering forward and that if the cable would have release the launches would have been fine. Is that not the case?

Just wondering.

This has been discussed over on the hull truth. The consensus was that the painters line (the one to the bow of the rescue boat) was too slack and not held far enough forwards. Proper tension on the painters line should have kept the bow pointing forward until they could release the davit on the hoist line. Then the boat would power forward enough to release the painter line and be off.

Makes sense.
