The former owner of my boat wasn't to careful about banging traps on the side of the boat and she's a bit scratched up, so what do i do to make this look good again? I was thinking of getting some of that pickup bed liner, available in dark green like the hull, and rolling a few coats on to fill the scratches and gouges and hopefully it would be tougher than the gelcote and protect the side.

steve it all depends, i still haven't been sold on the "bed liner" products yet. Hell it doesn't even stay on my 11 f250. If you were NOT going to be pulling traps, i would DA it down then board sand it. Fill with 3m, re sand. Re gelcoat. If your are going to pull traps, i would mark out an area bigger then the trap, grind down to raw, add a few more layers of mat. Do a quick gelcoat and then add a plate over it.

I would fill the holes/scratches with bondo or a marine epoxy. Then sand it down and re glass with just a resin. Lite sand and paint.

I would throw it in the trash and buy a new Flowers, Calvin Beal or Wesmac all over 40'. It will be clean and smooth.

Just get some green gelcoat from CCP, mix a little cabosil with it and put it in place. Toss some packing tape over the deeper gouges so it doesn't run, splash some partall over it with a spray bottle (windex or a preval sprayer) and take it back down with 400 then hit it with 800 and put some paste wax on it. Good to go.

Once again I think F/V has the correct solutions. It really comes down to how you are going to use the boat.
